The road was long and we ended up walking in the rain for most of the way to the nearest village. My feet were sore, I was freezing and I was really really hunger, like I could eat my own foot if I knew how to get it to my mouth kind of hungry. It also didn't help that most of my clothing was in rags because of the rabid animals. I never thought I would see the day where I hated bunny rabbits, I think I have issues. Nate abruptly stopped, referring to his map once again ( I swear it was magic that the rain hadn't ruined the map). I smashed into him jarring me out of my thoughts.
"Ow," I said rubbing my nose which now throbbed with it's own pulse.
"Well look who decided to leave the clouds and join the world again." I ignored him and started on my way again at a brisk pace, hoping to out race the cold that way just at our heels. Nate finally looked up from his map and realized that I was ahead of him not waiting for him to decide whether he wanted to go right or left or even up side down. He jogged up to me.
"Well look who decided to leave the clouds and join the world again," I mimicked his earlier retort.
"So I am now realizing that I know absolutely nothing about you miss.." Nate trailed off leaving me to fill in the blank.
"Your just realizing this now?" I swear boys could be so thick and stupid at times. "Maybe you should have thought about this before you asked me to travle with you? For all you know I could be a axe murderer or professional assassin."
"You probably are," I smacked his head. "but I still don't even know your name, so go on spill you life story." Nate looked at me and smirked
"Evelyn, and what would you like to know. Can't grantee that I'll anwser but you are welcome to ask."
"Well Evelyn here's an easy one where are you from and why the heck were you running through the woods?"
"Technically that's two question." Nate rolled his eyes at me. "Fine, I'm form the kingdom of Hemsworth, and the animals were chasing me because my step-daughter sent them on me."
"Wait hold the bus, you're married!?" Nate looked at me incredulously.
"Yes try and keep up. Do have any more questions or can we keep going now?"
We continued down the path in silence. I guess people just didn't quite understand how the world was growing. Women were more of a bargining chip than actual people, and some people were just to afraid or unaware to do anything about it.
"Why marry so young? Don't you ever want to find love?" Nate kept pushing. The last question hit home hard. My heart lurched at the thought of Nate, dead in the dust. I pushed it down like I did most of my problems. Maybe it was time to stop hiding them?
"M-My dad gave me to this guy old guy for some silver... but I was already in love," I whispered. "Then after we wed he killed my boyfriend right in front of me. He already had a daughter, who was a brat by the way, so when he died I got stuck with her." As I said this I could literally see the venom dripping off my tongue. I was just so angry, at Joe (the king), at Snow White, but mostly at my self. I was just one thing after another, people came in and tore my world to shreds and then left me to pick the pieces up again, and I couldn't do anything about it. With that I sat down and cried. I cried for David and my sick twisted life.
"I'm sorry," Nate mumbled. He just stood there for a few second like he had no idea what to do. Eventually he made up his mind and sat next to me. I leaned into the stupid sarcastic boy, in my wet soggy clothing, for some reason it made me warm.
"That's why I was in the woods." I said.
"What?" he replied.
"I was looking for my step-daughter, she ran away and I couldn't just leave her out on her own, even though she deserved it. Then when she saw me she sent a pack of rabid animals on me." I felt good to get that off my chest, and for to finally seem to care about me and my problems.
"I have no idea why she would do that, from what I know, all you've been is kind. Well unless you suddenly turn into an axe murderer." Nate put his arm around me. I let out a strangled laugh.
"I have no idea why she would either." I mumbled, mostly to myself.
"I'm sorry." Nate replied.
"It's not your fault."
With that we started down the path again.
