Chapter Text
It was the day of her wedding. Kate sat nervous and anxious in the changing room adjunct to the chapel. She was happy to marry the love of her life, but nervous and anxious as well. And she felt all alone, with no one on her side. Just weeks ago, she was in a similar room with her sister and her mother. Her sister looked so happy and beautiful, her mother looked so proud but now all she had were their memories.
Just then the door opened and Simon, Daphne and Agatha Danbury walked in.
Lady Danbury said, "Come child, it is time for you to get ready for your wedding. I may not be your mumma, but I always cared for you like my own." Kate smiled and replied "Lady Danbury, I will always be grateful for your support." Agatha simply held her hand and said "I know I failed you, I failed you in so many ways. I didn't know how bad things were with your mother and sister until the night of the Sheffield dinner. I didn't know what you gave up for your sister, until two weeks ago. Now, promise me you will not keep anything from me. I will always be on your side. And if that fool gives you any more trouble, I will not hesitate to drag him by his pointy ears."
Daphne chuckled, "I am certain there will be several of us ready to pull his pointy ears, if he gives her any trouble." Then she turned to Kate and said "Kate, Lady Danbury is Simon's godmother, so I am your sister in more ways than one. Do not ever forget that"
Simon said "Kate, I hope you will give me the honor of walking you down the aisle. The Bridgertons are a fearsome bunch so you and I will need to stick together." And Daphne elbowed him "Simon! Don't scare her! Kate, we are a very delightful bunch."
Kate couldn't stop her tears, but these were tears of happiness. Too much happiness, all at once. There was no room for nervousness or anxiety anymore, all she felt was their love and it overwhelmed her. Her lips quivered and she sobbed. Simon gave her a hug and said "You will not cry anymore. I am only sorry I didn't come sooner. If Daphne or even my godmother had informed me of the mess he was making, I would have knocked some sense into his head. But now, you have your brother on your side. And I will not have any more of your tears" Kate nodded her head and wiped her tears. And she said "He did nothing wrong, It was all my fault."
Simon smiled and said "You really need a different line and Daphne, I wouldn't mind if you tried that line once in a while" Daphne laughed "You wish" as Simon acted wounded and walked out of the room. Lady Danbury chuckled as she closed the door to the room and turned to dress Kate for her wedding.
Daphne opened the dress box and exclaimed "My, that is a beautiful color." The gown was made of dark red silk, the color of blood and had delicate floral patterns. Kate asked, "I hope it is not too much. I regret not choosing a more traditional gown" Lady Danbury tut-tutted "Dearest, nothing about you or this wedding is traditional. Embrace it. Make it yours." Kate smiled at the encouragement as Daphne pulled the gown out of the box and held it up against Kate. "This looks heavenly Kate. You will look even more beautiful, if that is even possible. Come let's get you in it, if only for a few hours." And then, she giggled at her own joke as Kate blushed wishing she could disappear.
As Daphne helped fasten the gown she said "Aha! Madame Delacroix has worked her magic again. These fasteners look unwieldy but come off in a snap" and giggled again. Kate blushed but then decided to give it back "Daphne, are you speaking from your own experience?" Now it was Daphne's turn to blush. Then, she pinched Kate's arm and said "Yes, I speak from my experience. Did you think Augie fell from the heavens to my lap?"
