Chapter 2

Lionpaw padded the dirty moss with his paw as his nose wrinkled. Yuck!

¨Well? Are you going to clean out our nests or just stare at them and hope it flies away?¨ Mousefur meowed. Longtail's nest was wet from polluseis used for his infected tick bite.

¨And while you're at it, I have a couple of ticks that need removing.¨ snickered Mousefur.

¨Back so soon?¨ asked Leafpool.

¨I have to get mouse bile for Mousefur's ticks. Why do I have to do this? That old badger is a mouse brain!¨ Whined Lionpaw.

¨ That is not how we talk to our elders, and you got yourself into this mess, so now you got to get yourself out. Sigh.

¨What are you doing Jaypaw?¨ asked Lionpaw.

¨Sorting herbs. What does it look like I'm doing?¨ Hissed Jaypaw

¨Sorry Mr.Grumpy¨ Lionpaw teased. Jaypaws pelt bristled as Lionpaw trotted out of the medicine cat den. He scrambled up the rocks that lead to the elders' den and sorted Mousefur's pelt adding mouse bile to the patches of ticks. When he was fished he hopped down into the center of the camp and washed his paws off by the stream. Then he padded over to the fresh-kill pile and grabbed a juicy and plump-looking vole.

¨Not so fast, Lionpaw,¨ Brambleclaw was walking towards Lionpaw holding a mouse from his previous hunting patrol.

¨Because of your little ¨Sneak out¨ you will be waiting until everyone has eaten today until you can get your piece of the fresh kill pile.¨

Lionpaws pelt bristled with frustration.

By the time everyone had eaten their fill, the sun had already set and everyone was heading towards their dens. Finally, thought Lionpaw. He peered into the fresh kill pile to fend one pitiful shrew, too sour to eat. Stale from yesterday's hunt. Lionpaw rolled his eyes, too hungry to care and bent down to eat the shrew.

Lionpaw crept towards his den and paused at the entrance. He had told Heatherpaw that he would see her again tonight. Lionpaw raced towards the forest and snuck into their secret cave. He saw the lit up cave as he walked through the tunnel. Inside was Heatherpaw washing herself in the moonlight.

¨Hi Heatherpaw,¨ Lionpaw greeted her.

¨It's good to see you, Lionpaw, oops! I mean Lionclaw warrior of Darkclan. Ready to play?¨ Heatherpaw meowed playfully.

¨Acshally,¨ Lionpaw began as he saw the joy drain from his friend's face. ¨I got caught, they don't know I am meeting you, but I am not supposed to be here. I am supposed to be in camp.¨

¨oh.¨ Murmured Heatherpaw sadly, ¨ You don't want to see me here anymore?¨ she whispered with a sunken heart.

¨No! I love these nights when we get to play, itś just that some cats are starting to doubt my loyalty. Even my own father.¨

¨Thank you for telling me. I will miss this, Lionpaw, and you hurt me, you can't forget that. Goodbye. See you at the next gathering.¨

Lionpaw tried to speak but all that came out was silence. Heatherpaw slipped through the tunnel that led to windclan, leaving Lionpaw all alone in the dark.

Lionpaw padded into the apprentice's den and curled up in his nest. When he opened his eyes he was in a strange world. The forest was so green and the trees sparkled. Lionpaw walked forward. ¨Hello?¨ he said.

¨Hello, sweet one,¨ replied a tortoiseshell cat that appeared next to him.

¨Is this Starclan?¨ he asked

¨yes.¨

¨Who are you?¨

¨My name is Spottedleaf and I have to show you something.¨

As they walked more cats who had died appeared all looking at Lionpaw.

¨The time has come for six clans to roam the lake.¨ Spottedleaf explained. ¨There will be cats who roam the night with dirt on their pelts. There will be six. Thunder, Wind, Shadow, River, Star and Dark.¨ Then Spottedlead disappeared and Lionpaw saw a lion made from heather charging right at him. Lionpaw woke up with a jolt. There will be six, there will be pelts as dark as the earth, and they shall rule the night.
