This is me telling u a little context and how was my first days in Germany. I felt like the official start of my life here is after this brief episode.
Meet me, Dulce María but I like Dulce.
I'm from some country in Latin America, let's say I'm from Mexico. With my college I'm studying one semester exchange in Germany, more precise Munich. I don't know any German but I know English enough to write this dairy in English and still understand the classes. Making clear, I didn't got any scholarship or any support by the government, me and my mom worked hard for years just to make this dream of mine come true. And finally at the age of 21 is turning real.
As soon as I arrived it was a torture, I was traveling from Bogota to New York, then a 4 hour connection and then I took another Flight to Munich and arrived at 9 a.m. with zero sleeping. Like for real I could sleep a wink all trip and it was almost a 20 hour long. Well, anyways, I still had time before going to the airbnb so I wandered all around downtown until 5. I was tired as hell and to make it worst, my phone didn't had any kind of connection so I had to bought a new SIM card that I couldn't install until arriving to the airbnb so yeah my first day in Munich was a little fucked up.
Then I got Lost in the Ubahn and for fuck sake I was getting desperate until I found a place with free wifi to look for where I was going. When arrived to the airbnb I slept 17 hours, jet lag is the worst.
Trying to revive I went looking for food, the second adventure here. First of all I noticed there was any Walmart nearby. Like I've been too much in the USA so I thought that at least in Europe there would be a Walmart but I was wrong. The market I found was called EDEKA and the prices were amazing, like what the fuck, in America I found this products at half of it's price here! But I was hungry so yeah I bought the expensive food.
Anyway some friends of my same university were gonna visit me the 1st of October, the same day I was moving to my definitive apartment and the same day my university was starting a week of activities to meet people. And just because we are on Germany, all activities included a bier hahahha. I'm not complaining is just that here in Germany everyone drink everywhere and anytime, even in the Ubahn.
As a Student, I asked for the cheapest option of accommodation and I thought I was going to share place with someone based on the price of 375€ but it turned out it was a small house just for myself. What a lucky me. Then I went to the dinner with the people of my university for the first activity and my friends went to the Oktoberfest, after the dinner I was supposed to meet them there.
I arrived to the restaurant and I already had a team assigned for the activities, the Blues, and I sat in a huge table to have dinner with my team, the restaurant was full of Erasmus and Exchange students, almost 200. The dinner was uncomfortable, we were a team of 25 unknowns from different parts of the world meeting for dinner in a vintage restaurant. Sounds cool but when you are there turns out a little uncomfortable cause you know absolutely no one. But for my luck everyone was really open and up to know people, maybe because we were all new and wanted to make friends. I'm going to talk about the Blues later.
After the dinner I looked for my friends in the Oktoberfest, unfortunately there was this uncomfortable situation of a drunk man. I was walking and this man approached me:
M: hi what's your name?
I was surprised but ok, like I knew he was drunk.
D: hi my name is Dulce.
M: you are so beautiful, where are you from?
D: I'm from Venezuela (I lied obviously)
M: No way you are American! Can I invite you a drink?
He was getting closer and I was getting scared so I rejected him but in that moment he grabbed my face with his hands and kissed me. I was so scared that I just got freeze in that moment, didn't kissed him back. When he got separated by me I was about to cry and told him.
D: I need to look for my friends, see ya!
Then I walked as fast as I could into the crowd, when I was as far as I could from there I started crying. It was just my 4th day in Germany and already got harassed on the street. I had this thought that this things don't happened in Europe but I was naive and this happened. I was devastated, after all in America this kind of situations and worst happened before and even if Munich is a beautiful city, this kind of experiences had me suffering. When I found my friends I was really bad crying reviving traumas, but they were so cool that they paid me one ride in the roller coaster. Actually they advices me to tell the authorities, after all, here in Europe this kind of harassment is always taken seriously, not as in our country... But I was too scared and I was new here so I didn't wanted any problems or the risk of being deported so I just left it like that. Sharing time with my friends made me happier and spent the night with them in my little house just sleeping so calm and safe.
The next day they had to leave back to Hildesheim and Frankfurt where they were spending their exchange and there I was again all alone in a new city, tired and with no idea what to do. But fortunately, the Blues were having an activity that same afternoon so I came back home and got prepared for the official start of my life in Germany.
