Chapter One-First Day

I'm just standing there. Staring at the towering academy before me. I'm here.

Never have I hated my parents so much.

I walk to the courtyard just do I don't make a fool out of myself and follow the other students inside. I absentmindedly sit next to a dark-haired teen around my age, not paying him any attention. My eyes are on the stage. I do notice him look surprised at the freshman class representative. They do look alike. Maybe they're brothers.

"To be able to join you here at True Cross, the school I've long admired, is something that is both thrilling and sobering..."

I don't really pay attention to the rest. What is there to really listen to? Before long, everyone is outside, talking to each other. I just stand there, lost, until I see two girls talking to Yukio. Huh. He's really that popular. I just don't see what the big deal is. Yeah, he's in Advanced, but you don't have to swoon over him because of it!

The same guy I was sitting next to is on the opposite side of where I am. He's looking at his brother. They almost look alike. The dark-haired boy almost instantly looks angry, but not at the rep. Is he one of those guys who's stuck in the brain of a middle schooler? I sure hope not.

I wish I could just see what's going on in that one's head.

Everyone walks back inside, but through another door this time. There's a large staircase and two escalators. I just watch the guy freak out and talk to himself. Yes, this is a school, buddy. Stop drawing attention to yourself.

We walk to the dining hall. There he is again, being the center of attention.

I walk to the classroom. There're some girls talking about the guy behind them. I just want to shut them up or tell him to calm down, but I honestly don't know what to do with that loudmouth. My parents just want me at True Cross to have me learn about how valuable their traditions are and make me become an exorcist just like them.

Just. Like. Them.

Exactly the same.

And I don't fucking like it.

They wouldn't just shut up about ONE B+ at home. Now I'm just alone. With a crazy guy in my class. Surrounded by people who genuinely want to be students here.

Yeah, demons exist, but I couldn't just lead a life of my own.

My parents were mad at me for entering a non-Advanced class. They told me that I failed the exam, by their standards, anyway.

And I'm going to be a good little puppy and sit, stay, and behave.

I walk to the dorms. The tour is over, and classes are going to start on Monday. That's what the teacher said, anyway. I wish I wasn't here. I would be happy to suffer through the uniform if it was any other color. I would be happy to try my best here. I would be happy to make friends. I would be happy period if I were here in my own wishes.

I hear someone else's footsteps lower down the staircase. The same guy from the last few times I saw him. He's just in his own little world. Then, he starts shouting about the dorms. I don't know where they are either. I was just walking around, I think so, anyway. I walk back up the stairs in search of a crowd of students to follow who's actually reliable. I see this key on the ground and pick it up. Strange. It has (Y/N) (L/N) on it as well, messily scrawled in.

As I get up and walk, something bumps into me. The same guy. Except now there's a dog with him.

"Ow! What's the big deal?!" I yell. The dog starts running, the key in its mouth, so we start running after it.

We run outside and finally catch up to it, seeing it climb up a lamppost. A cloud of smoke covers it, revealing the academy director. We both jump and yelp.

"Pardon me, but it would be unseemly for the director of the academy to be caught prowling around the halls during the day," the director says. I stay as quiet as possible. The boy seems surprised.

"You shape shifted! Does that mean exorcists can shape shift?!"

No. No, it doesn't.

The director seems to just glance at me and instantly tell what I am and why I'm here.

"God, no! Although, I am an exception," the man says, two keys in his hand. He tosses the two to the both of us. "Those keys grant access to the cram school through any door any time."

"Cram school?" the two of us question. The boy is just more confused than me. I'm a demon, shouldn't the director be banishing me back to Gehenna or something?!

"It's where you'll train to become exorcists," he explains. Okay, I'd much rather be at Gehenna. "Each day, you'll attend normal high school classes, but, afterwards, you'll train at the cram school to become a Page. While you study exorcism, you'll be considered an exorcist in training. Your high school classes don't begin until next week, but cram school? Well, that starts today."

There's a small second of silence as he walks towards the both of us.

"I trust you two are ready to begin?"

"Never been readier," the boy answers. I just nod.

"Indeed? I must warn you, though," the director says, addressing the both of us. "It would be best if you kept the whole son of Satan thing confidential, and, you, being a lesser demon. Say what you want about your ears, fangs, and tails, but the flames are a no-no. Control yourselves."

"Okay. I'll do my best," the boy says.

"Fine," I sigh.

"Fabulous!" he exclaims as he hops up the ledge and bows. "Very well, let's get to it!"

He still stays in the same standing pose as he jumps and disappears. We both jump and look down to see if he's okay. He's just standing there, waiting for us to hop down. It's not that far, it's practically harmless.

"Now, then, if you'd be so kind, try opening one of these doors with the key I gave you," the director says. The boy hops down before me and opens the door. I'm right behind them, walking into the hall filled with orange, yellow, blue, green, and black. Some browns are mixed in too. We both look around in amazement. The hall seems never-ending. "The freshman class is in room 1106. This way."

"Okay," we both reply in unison. I'm still stuck in five minutes ago.

Is that boy beside me really the son of Satan?

"Here we are," the director says. "Oh, and I'll be sitting in with you two today."

"Oh, shit, now I'm getting nervous," the boy replies.

"It's really no big deal," I point out.

"Ein, Zwei, Drei."

One, two, three.

Okay, learning German paid off.

Before us is once again that dog with the same pink collar.

"All righty, let's go," the dog says.

"Wait! You can talk?" the boy asks.

"You're both sure you want to be exorcists?" the dog asks. He's glaring at us as if we're both idiots. "You better make up your minds before you open that door."

We both stare down the door as if we're waiting for it to make the first move in a fight. Then, the boy takes hold of the handle and opens it.
