Glancing in the rearview mirror, I pressed the pedal of my car, zooming through the busy street on the outskirts of the city.
Damn it! They're so difficult to lose.
It's been a couple of hours since I landed back in New York, and now here I am, in a car chase.
And no, I haven't gone home yet.
I have decided to hear them out and get things back to as normal as possible, and act civil, but I will decide what to do further after hearing them out.
'You can't live without them, admit it.'
Okay, fine. I can't live without them. I did for the past 16 years, but not anymore. They're everything that mom left behind for me. They're assholes, but they are la mia famiglia.
My thoughts are interrupted when the ringtone of my phone goes off in the car. Answering it, a voice speaks.
"We ask you to stop it." The man on the other side spoke.
"Stop what?"
"Chief. Please stop trying to lose us, we aren't going anywhere. We have strict orders from Commander Carlsaw."
"You're no fun, Roger." I feigned annoyance.
"As my memory recalls, being fun was not on my job description, Chief."
Smartass.
"Quan, would you like to remind your boss what happens when someone acts like a smartass?" I ignored Roger and spoke to the other solider of my security detail. I smile to myself when I hear some whispers and shuffling going around on the other side.
"Chief." Roger's voice is back on the phone, trying hard not to show his uneasiness, which made me smile even more. "You wouldn't do that."
