Luna meets Laila, Laila meets Luna

As my vision cleared, having been blurred by anger, I realized I could ask her why she ran myself. I knew I would be able to reach her because she left me perfect footprints in the sand that conveniently lead me straight to her, and the message in the sand that read:

I think your dog is wonderful- Laila

Preoccupied and forgetting my frustration, I stood there for a few moments on that cold beach, where I only had my favorite Rainbows and a thin grey sweater, just repeating her beautiful name;

Laila, Laila, Laila

Her name seemed to flow and roll like the waves. It was sounded like the night sky, of infamous beauty. I listened to the waves as her name echoed in my mind and then I kneeled down in the sand before her scrawling and added:

Laila,
Thank you, i'm quite fond of her myself -Jeremy

I stood up, looked at her footprints and had a craving to follow them even though I didn't know where they would take me.

So I did for about half a mile. But it was almost pitch dark so I turned back and went home where my recreant of a bed was waiting for me, too scared to dare to leave the familiarity of my room.

The next day I couldn't stop thinking about the mysterious girl. At dinner I tried to eat as fast as humanly possible. My mom asked me what was on my mind. I honestly answered that infact I couldn't wait to get to the beach.

She eyed me worriedly for a moment and then spoke "Jeremy," she said condescendingly, "Honey, we've lived two blocks away from the beach your whole life, what is the big rush?"

I shrugged. My mom studied me some more, like she was analyzing me and then shook her head. "Teenage boys," she sighed, "I will never understand them." I took that as my hint to go.

It was still light by the time I got out the door, and I was thankful. I just hoped Laila would be there waiting. When I arrived at the beach she was nowhere in sight. I looked around to affirm it was the same spot I saw her last night, and sure enough was the same message in the sand a few feet away, it just looked a little faded. I guess I wasn't so surprised, I mean she didn't even speak to me, she ran away from me. I guess that doesn't exactly cry, "I want to get to know you".

But I wanted to know her, understand better why a girl like her would up and run. Luna sat down and then nudged my hand so I sat down next to her and pet her. I must have sat there for an hour, waiting on a girl that I knew would never come.

It's the darndest thing, how hopes can handicap even the clearest of minds.

Soon the sun was setting and I realized how stupid I had been to think she would come back. So I got up and started walking home. About halfway down the first block I ran back. And in the sand, in case she did come, I wrote

I'll bring Luna 2morow I wud <3 2 c u again If u want 2 c me meet me here at sunset

Satisfied, I stood up with Luna at my side, and left. The next evening I came back, hoping to see her dancing barefoot again. But she wasn't dancing barefoot. But she also wasn't dancing with shoes on. In fact she wasn't dancing at all, because she wasn't there.

But under a rock, laid over our messages in the sand, was an envelope. I took this envelope out from under the rock and held it in my hands. On the front, in her simple handwriting, was Jeremy. Inside was a crisp white folded letter that read:

Dear Jeremy,
I don't know what kind of person you are, how old you are, or even if your name really is Jeremy. However, I do believe your dog's name is Luna. She looks like a Luna. Sorry I ran away from you the other night. I was just a bit surprised and quite embarrassed. You see, I usually don't have an audience watching me dance (if you can even call it that). I would also love to officially meet you. Like normal people. Although, I'm not very normal. Which is why I couldn't watch the sunset, even if I really did want to. I bet as you are reading this right now the sun is setting. It must be beautiful."

I stopped reading and looked at the sunset. Though I didn't yet understand why she couldn't see it too, I knew one thing for certain: it was beautiful.

I've never actually seen a sunset before, but from what I've seen in pictures and what I've heard, a sunset is a wonderful thing. When you are done reading this you can either go home or stay watching the sunset and wait for me. I will come when all the wonderful colors disappear and are replaced with a deep blue, after the sun is gone from the sky.

Luna's number one fan,

Laila

P.S. I really hope you decide to stay
