Named after the isle of fairies and magic in Arthurian legends where Arthur was said to be healing from a deadly wound, Avellen is a small town in Massachusetts, US. It is an hour and thirty minutes from Boston, an hour and fifteen minutes from Harvard University in Cambridge, and at least two hours from Salem, the town where most of the older families came from.

While close to other small towns in Massachusetts, Avellen is within a cradle of dark mountains—named the Blackmounts—hiding the relatively small town from view from the western and northern side. It is also surrounded by thick forests—referred to as Avellen's Groove, or, Oakwald—filled with oaks, hickory, northern hardwoods, pine—white and red—and maple trees—elm, ash, and red—from all sides, especially covering the town's only road in the southern part of town. The forest is said to be filled with wild animals such as red foxes, deer, and otters.

To the eastern side of town and where most of the busiest parts of town, lays Adeline Lake that is mostly covered by mist during the morning. There was once a legend that the Adeline which the lake was named after, was a witch who drowned herself to avoid having to marry the mayor's son in the 18th century.
