While close to other small towns in Massachusetts, Avellen is within a cradle of dark mountains—named the Blackmounts—hiding the relatively small town from view from the western and northern side. It is also surrounded by thick forests—referred to as Avellen's Groove, or, Oakwald—filled with oaks, hickory, northern hardwoods, pine—white and red—and maple trees—elm, ash, and red—from all sides, especially covering the town's only road in the southern part of town.
