Chapter 3

Annie’s POV

As soon as my eyes open I know it’s not yet morning. I can hear crying. I pull on my jacket and my boots and run out of my room. The hallway is dark but I can see my parents standing outside my grandmother’s room, holding each other tightly and crying.

“Mum? Dad? What happened?” I ask.

My mother rushes over to me and hugs me tightly.

“I’m so sorry. I know how much she meant to you.” She says.

“Mum what are you saying?” I ask, pulling away.

“Honey your Grandma has passed away.” My Dad says quietly.

“No. You’re lying.” I say, pushing past them and walking into my grandmother’s room.

She’s lying in her bed, eyes closed, as if she were sleeping. I walk slowly over to her and take her hand. It’s cold and lifeless and I know she’s no longer here before my father can pull me away from her.

“No! This can’t be happening! Everything was supposed to be perfect from now on! I did as you told me! I’m doing what you want and I’m staying here! How has this happened?”

“Annie calm down. I know. You’ve done everything right. But your grandmother is old and this is inevitable. She couldn’t live forever.” My dad says calmly.

“Finn.” I say quietly.

“What?” My mother asks.

“Finn! He doesn’t know!”

Before either of them can stop me I’ve run back up the hallway and into my brother’s room. I rush over to him and shake his shoulder fiercely.

“Finn! Wake up!” I shout frantically.

“Annie! Calm down! It’s three in the morning. What’s wrong?” He asks, sitting up.

Before I can say anything, tears start streaming down my cheeks and I throw myself at him. His arms wrap around me and he hugs me tightly.

“An what’s wrong?” Finn asks, clearly concerned.

“Grandma. S-she p-p-passed away.” I say in between sobs.

The room is silent for a few moments until I look up at my brother. Tears are running down his cheeks and splashing into my hair.

We sit there for a while, holding each other and crying.

After some time our parents come in.

“We’re really sorry kids. We know how much she meant to you. She meant a lot to all of us.” My dad says.

Finn and I both nod. There isn’t anything we can do about it now.
