It was about 5 hours later and the only noise in the office was the sound of Grace typing on her keyboard. Other than that, complete silence.
Michael was still in his office working on his "project" while Dwight was sitting at his desk working. Grace felt like Dwight kept looking at her but she thought maybe she was just overly tired or something.
Grace Talking Head:
"I'm very surprised that Michael has stayed in his office for so long. I thought for sure by now he would've come out and done his Cosby impression or anything just to procrastinate but he's actually being.. Quiet. He must care a lot about this project. I had no idea that Michael could have that much of an attention span."
Dwight turned off his computer and got up walking over to Michael's office. Grace's eyes followed him as he walked in and started talking to their boss.
Normally Grace couldn't care less about what Dwight was doing but for once she found herself actually curious. She's always kinda wondered what Dwight was actually like outside of work. Yeah, he was annoying in the office but Grace felt like there had to be something underneath that. She felt there was more to him than "The annoying, very gullible, fun to prank kiss-ass". (Which were her co-workers' words, not hers.)
"Hi, Michael.", Dwight said approaching his desk.
"Hey, Dwight.", Michael said not taking his eyes off his computer screen.
"What're you working on in here?", Dwight said with a mischievous smile on his face.
"I said it was a surprise, Dwight. Remember?"
Dwight began walking closer and edging around Michael's desk. "Do you need any help or.."
"Dammit, Dwight! What'd I just say?", Michael scolded.
"Can I just look at it?"
"No. You'll see it when it's done."
"Well, I just think that as 'Assistant to the Regional Manager' I should be able to see it early, meaning before everyone else in the office.", Dwight stated.
"Well, you know what, Dwight? That's not even a real position.", Michael said looking up at him.
Dwight's smile dropped.
"Get out.", Michael said.
Dwight walked out looking down at his feet. As he sat back down at his desk Grace looked up at him.
"You okay?", she asked.
"Yeah, just.. Bored I guess.", he answered playing with something on his desk.
Grace overheard Dwight and Michael's conversation so she knew why he seemed kind of bummed out now.
She never understood why Michael was mean to him so much. I mean, she knew Dwight could be annoying and kind of a 'know-it-all' but sometimes he actually could be helpful. And a lot of times he was just genuinely trying to help or have fun and Michael yelled at him for no reason. She hated to admit it but.. She kinda felt bad for Dwight sometimes.
She looked around for a minute. Finally, her eyes landed on Jim's desk. She leaned forward towards Dwight.
"You wanna help me with a prank?"
Dwight sighed shaking his head.
"On Jim?", Grace added.
"I'm listening.", Dwight said leaning forward, making Grace smile.
"Okay, so I was thinking that we could tape an airhorn underneath his chair, and then when he sits down it'll go off and scare the shit out of him."
"No, not clever enough.", he said.
"Yeah, you're right. Not my best." Grace leaned back in her chair with a sigh. She looked around the room waiting for an idea to come to her.
"Oh! I got it." Grace pulled out a notepad and started writing something down.
Dwight looked over at her and started tilting his chin up to try and get a look at what she was writing. He didn't wanna seem too eager to be joining in on his first prank. He also tried to avoid bonding with any Halperts as much as possible as he considered them his enemies.
Letting his curiosity get to him, he got up and walked over to Grace's desk. He hovered over her reading the note as she continued writing.
"Oh my God. This is brutal. I like it.", Dwight said smiling.
Grace looked up at him returning his smile.
Maybe tonight wouldn't be so bad after all.
