The Snakes

As soon as the clock hit three, I knew what was coming. Hissing from all around me. Dark shadows morphed and danced along the walls. The floor seemed to writhe and move.

They always came at night. The snakes. Taunting me, slowly crawling up the bed and wrapping themselves around my arms, around my eyes. Slowly, they covered my entire body. I tried to move, to scream, but nothing worked.

The hissing got louder, and louder, their grip tightening, until-

"Hey, love, you're alright." Ben said softly, stroking a hand though my hair. I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding in. "It's just me, nothing else. You're safe here."

Was anywhere safe?

He flicked a light on, and I glanced around my room. Now shadows, no snakes. Just Benjamin and the bed, papers scattered the floor.

"This won't last forever." He assured me, gripping my hand tightly.

I nodded, but the voices in my head were screaming. What did he mean, it wouldn't last forever? To me, it seemed this had been happening for an eternity. Time itself had become meaningless, it was just repeating the same meaningless actions, day after day.

Nothing's worth it without her.
