Song for this chapter: She Never Made It To The Emergency Room- Motionless In White
Rachel's POV
I pulled on my blazer and took one last look in the mirror. I sighed, I hate looking so formal, but lawyers have to look presentable to be taken seriously. I had my raven, black hair up in a tight bun and light makeup on my face. I was wearing a plain black suit: a black blouse, black blazer with 3/4 length sleeves, a pencil skirt that stopped about two inches above the knee and flesh coloured tights. I put on black 4 inch stilettos and put the clear nail polish back on my vanity.
I make my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. I grab a cereal bar for my breakfast and then grab my black, leather handbag off of the bar stool. I walk out of the door and to my black Jaguar E-type (being a lawyer pays well).
As I was driving the car phone rang, interrupting Marilyn Manson's: 'Tainted Love' that was blaring through the speakers.
"Rachel Paige speaking," I answered formally.
"Hello Miss. Paige," My secretary Ryan greeted me.
"Hello Ryan what can I do for you?" I asked cheerier this time.
"There's someone waiting in here to have an unscheduled meeting for you."
"Well I'm a very busy person on a tight schedule does this 'person' know that?"
"They do m'am, but they insisted on the basis that it's a very important subject matter."
"Very well I will squeeze them in at 8:00 can they wait five minutes for me to actually arrive?"
"I'm sure they can Miss. Paige thank you for taking them in," Ryan smiled.
"Of course Ryan and how many times do I have to tell you: when we're not at a meeting or any other business thing you can call me Rachel," I insisted warmly.
"Okay thank you," He hesitated, "Rachel."
"I'll see you soon Ryan goodbye," I dismissed and hung up the phone.
I drove the rest of the way to work hearing only only the sound of the indicator every now and then and the sound of the tires on the road. When I arrived I grabbed my bag from the passenger seat and hopped out of the car. With each one of my steps, a click sounded from my heels hitting the concrete pavement.
I signed in and made my way to the elevator. I pressed the 14th button, the top floor, and the last second Ryan jumped into the elevator with me.
"Good morning Miss. Paige looking lovely as ever," Ryan greeted me.
"As do you Ryan loving the tie," I winked, a small smirk gracing my face.
"Thank you Miss," He smiles gratefully.
"Of course dear. Now this man?"
"His name is Christopher Cerulli and he is here to sort out a lawyer for his friend."
"Who is his 'friend'?" I asked sceptically.
"Richard Olson," Ryan mumbled.
"Yes I've heard of him, but I haven't heard much of his case. This should be interesting," I smirked.
The elevator dinged and then the doors slid open. I shot out of there briskly with Ryan struggling to keep up beside me.
"Where is he?" I asked.
"The waiting area outside of your office," Ryan replied.
I nodded and unlocked the side entrance to my office. I put my bag down and hung my blazer up on the hook on the back of the door. I straightened up a few of the papers on my desk and spat my gum out into the waste paper basket next to my desk.
I opened the front door of my office, which leads to the waiting area and looked outside. The waiting room was a beige room with a brown leather couch and a brown leather armchair in it. There's a table with a stack of magazines on it and a bookshelf in the corner filled with books on law. On the wall is replicas of Van Gogh pictures and a real Banksy.
On the brown armchair is a tall man, about 6ft2, covered in tattoos on his arms, necks and hands. He had raven black hair that was parted down the middle and fell in front of his face from his position. He had pale skin and his fingernails had black nail varnish on them. He had stretched ears, snakebites and a vertical labret piercing. He wore a short sleeved black dress shirt, black skinny jeans that his shirt was tucked into, black sunglasses and black platform creepers. He had his head in his hands and was staring at the floor. I cleared my throat and his head shot up. He stood up quickly and towered over me.
"Hello I'm Rachel Paige, attorney," I greeted formally and held my had out to him.
He shook it firmly. "I'm Christopher Cerulli and I'm here to talk to you about a case I want you working on."
"Please come into my office and we can discuss this," I invited him into my office then walked into it myself.
Chris walked in slowly and looked around the room. The walls are a dark grey and the carpet is jet black. In the corner of the room to the left of the door is a bookshelf full of law books, textbooks and the My Chemical Romance biography for my lunch break. There's a framed picture of a horizon on the wall on the right wall next to the side door and on the left wall is all of my diplomas and qualifications from law school and awards. My desk is a sleek black surface and my chair is a simple leather desk chair. The desk contains a stack of paper, a laptop and a pen pot. The wall behind the desk was a window with a light grey curtain over it because when I have clients in I shut it for privacy and turn the light on so the room is illuminated with an orange glow.
"Please sit down." I gestured to one of the two black chairs on the other side of my desk then I sat down in my own.
Chris hesitantly sat down and took off his sunglasses. He had perfectly drawn on, black eyebrows and chestnut eyes. He had long eyelashes and slight black marks under his eyes from where he missed when taking off eyeliner.
"What can I help you with?" I asked.
"It's my friend Richard," Chris sighed. He seemed very upset about whatever has happened with him. "He's been arrested and possibly facing a life sentence for something he hasn't done."
"Would you like to go into the crime committed please?"
"Basically, Richard was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Someone got killed and he was arrested for it, but it was not him. It was a string of murders so he has the weight of all of them on him. That's all I know, you'll have to speak to him to get the rest of the information."
"Where is he?" I asked.
"He's in a federal holding facility until his trial next week, but then he may be moved to Scranton Federal Prison."
"I don't know if I should take this case if there is so much evidence against him," I said reluctantly.
"Listen," Chris sighed, taking my short, thin fingers in his long, bony ones and stared deep into my eyes, "Richard is my best friend and I know he didn't do this. He has too much to lose and he's too nice of a person. He doesn't deserve what he's getting he's an innocent man! Please help him, please."
I sighed heavily, "Take me to see him."
