I stumbled through the hallway of the loud and clamoring train to try and find a compartment.
I peered into one of them to see a boy with jet black hair and round glasses and another boy with messy red hair sitting next to him.
"Is it ok if I sit here?" I ask the two boys as they stuffed their mouths with candy. "Every other compartment is filled."
They looked at each other for a quick moment then both said, "Sure!"
I stepped into the compartment and sat on the seat across from the red haired boy. "I'm Ron, Ron Weasley." He told me with food in his mouth and a little bit of dirt on his nose.
"I'm Harry." The boy with glasses said confidently.
"Nice to meet you, Ron and Harry." I shake their hands dramatically.
"Is it your first year here at Hogwarts, too?" Harry asked me after putting down a piece of candy.
"Yeah," I answer. "I'm still trying to adjust to everything. It's all so crazy: magic."
"I didn't know magic was real until recently as well. I grew up with my muggle aunt, uncle, and cousin."
"Muggle?"
"It's the name for non-magic folk," Ron interjected.
"Oh- I guess my parents are muggles then."
"You're muggle-born?" Harry asked as Ron continued stuffing his mouth with licorice.
"Well, if that means I'm the first witch to be born into a long line of muggles, then yes."
Both boys let out small giggles.
"Do you guys want to meet my rat? His name is Scabbers." He showed us the fat rat in his hands and I almost immediately felt a churn in my stomach. "My brother taught me a spell to turn him yellow, want to see it?"
"Sure," Harry shrugged, he didn't seem to be very interested in the rat whereas I couldn't take my eyes off of him.
Something about that rat just wasn't right but I decided to let these thoughts flee my mind.
As he pulled his wand from his pocket, we heard the compartment door open and turned to see who or what opened the door.
It was a girl who looked our age with brown hair and a chubby face. "Have any of you seen a toad? Some boy named Neville lost his." She then noticed Ron's wand. "Oh, are you doing magic? Let's see it then."
Ron pointed his wand to his rat and began, "Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid, fat rat yellow!"
There was a quick small flash of light coming from the box that the rat had his head in, but it went away within the same second it appeared.
"Is that a real spell?" The girl asked with a bit of snobishness in her tone. "Well it's not very good, is it?"
Ron looked to Harry with disapproval in his eyes.
The girl walked to the seat next to me and sat. "Holy cricket! You're Harry Potter! I'm Hermione Granger," she then looked over to the messy looking Ron. I was a little confused as to how she knew his first and last name but decided to let it go. "And you are?"
The red-haired boy replied, with food in his mouth, "Um, Ron Weasley."
"Pleasure," was all she said until looking at me. "What about you?"
"Yeah... What is your name?" Harry put his candy down and eyed me carefully.
"Oh, I'm Lily."
As my name rolled off my tongue, Harry's face contorted into a sort of scared and surprised expression.
