CHAPTER ONE
REFLECTIONS

MOST OF the time, Vivienna Elrod doesn't feel very nice. Of course, you wouldn't be able to see that─ if you pulled ten people at random and placed Vivienna among them, she would blend in perfectly well. But her heart sags with the weight of a million secrets, like a piece of sodden-down laundry attached itself to her organ. She'd seen her father take knives to carve out hearts of apples and the skin of tangerines, the same way he'd picked up her heart and dropped it so many times it bruised into a fleshy, soft fruit.

As Vivienna stared at him, she imagined what he could do with her heart. Could he mold it into a strong woman, one who holds her head high? Create something out of something broken? Surely, it couldn't be harder than creating something from nothing, could it?
