"Hello Greer." she smiles. I wasn't sure what to say. After all these years of thinking she was dead and then showing up at my doorstep, I had no idea what to say. Part of me was thinking this was completely fake, just some mirage in front of me.
"B-b-beck." I finallly stutter.
"What's up?" I hear him reply. He waltzes into the room and stops dead when he sees mom.
"Holy shit. Kenzie!" Kenzie enters and breaks down into tears when she sees mom.
"M-m-mom?" she cries. Beck shoves us behind him protectively and eyes our mother nervously.
"I thought you were dead." He whispers.
"Hi, nice to see you too." She replies with a slightly sarcastic tone. Beck crosses his arms and narrows his eyes.
"Well excuse me that we've thought you were dead for the past few years." Beck hisses with just as much sarcasm.
"You've all grown up so much!" She exclaims and clasps her hands with a smile on her face and tears in her eyes. She pulls us into a tight hug and we all stand there stiffly.
"What are you doing here?" Beck demands. He steps in front of Kenzie and I in defensive mode. If there was one way I didn't want to see my brother, it's angry.
"I thought you'd be a lot happier to see me."
"Well you thought wrong."
"Beck!" I hiss. "What he means is, is that we are just confused. We haven't seen you for years everyone thinks you're dead."
"I'll explain everything, I promise."
"Come in then." Beck says warily. We all move into the living room. Mom sits in one of the arm chairs, Beck in the chair next to her and Kenzie and I sit on the couch across from them.
"So, explain then." Beck says after ten minutes of agonizing silence.
"What do you want to know?"
"Everything." I butt in.
"Alright, a good place to start is at the beginning. Right after Beck was born, your father was laid off from work and we decided to start our own business. Greer, you were born just years later. As the years went on our small business grew and grew to a multi-billion dollar corporation. We had a lot of power. And with a lot of power comes corruption.
We got involved with some bad people. Unknowingly and by accident we signed a contract with them, not realizing they were part of a black market and all the money to them funded a terrorist group in Iran.
When we discovered, we burned the contract and tried to hide the strings that tied us to the corrupted group. Kenzie, your father, was the head of the group.
He was furious when we dissolved the contract and promised he'd seek revenge. Well he did. He came after your father and I in hopes that the corporation would crumble without us to run it. He was afraid we were going to say something to the authorities that would shut down his operations and land him a one way ticket to a lifetime in jail.
So he tried to kill us. He thought both you kids were gone but Greer, you were home and you saw everything that happened."
"While you were dying, you put your finger to your lips, you told me to be quiet. Why?" I ask.
"I wanted to keep you and the company safe. As long as Kenzie's father thought your father and I were dead and no one had seen the crime, he would leave you and your brother alone. And that way the company wouldn't crumble. If anyone found out we had illegal dealings, we'd be shut down for sure. And I wasn't going to have him be the ruin of our company." I could tell my mom's words were angry and bitter.
"So how did you survive?" Kenzie questions.
"I have people." My mother smirks.
"So my dad had me with you, then tried to kill you?"
"I think that was part of the reason he was so angry. I choose to go back to Greer and Beck's father, not stay with him. And I told him to keep his mouth shut about you or I'd tell the authorities about his operation." Mom explained.
"How did you survive?"
"I have people." Mom adds with a small smirk.
"Why didn't you come home sooner?" I ask quietly.
"I was afraid that he would find out I was still alive and kill you and me. But then he went after you and I figured because he already knows, I might as well show myself."
"He's dead now." I say.
"What?"
"I killed him by accident when he was attacking Kenzie and I in London."
"London, he dragged you all the way to London." I shrug my shoulders in reply.
"I'm so sorry to all of you that I haven't been there for you, but you need to understand my reasons. It was for your own protection. He would have found out about you sooner if I had come back. I'm so sorry my children."
"I think you should go now. We all need some time to process this." Beckett says. Mom nods and stands up, giving us each a hug before leaving.
The rest of the night we sat in the living room, moving from discussions to silence, thinking about everything mom had told us. We didn't make it to bed until the sun started peaking up across the beach.

"So she just waltzed into your house, told you everything and then left?" Wes asks. He's sitting on my bed with his arm around me.
"Yup," I nod. "She never left a number or anything to contact her with. She just disappeared."
"Do you believe everything she told you?"
"I'm not sure yet. After everything that's happened, and all the truths I found out from behind the lies, I'm not sure I can trust her. But at the same time, she is my mom and part of me is telling me why would she lie?"
"Just be cautious, okay? I don't want to see you get hurt." Suddenly a thought hit me and I almost fell off the bed. Wes grabs me just in time and steadies me. I look at him with wide eyes.
"Holy shit Wes, I just thought of something."
"What?"
"If my mother's alive, the what if my dad is too?"
