It was race time. I glance over at the group who is sitting by the finish line cheering my name.

"You are so fucking lucky!" Liz exclaims to me. "You're dating Wesley, the entire popular group is here at our race where they would never go for a million bucks, cheering you on!"

"Actually I'm not dating Wesley anymore." I say softly. Liz gives me a sympathetic look.

"It's alright sweetie, many other girls have gotten dumped by him."

"What makes you think I got dumped?"

"You mean you dumped him?"

"Yea." Liz's eyes widen.

"I think you're the first girl to ever do that!" Liz gives me a high five and I crack a small smile.

"Race time in five minutes!" I hear being said over the speakers.

"Come on, lets go line up." I follow her over to our starting box where I line up in the front row, Liz right next to me. The man blows his whistle and we all approach the starting line. My finger is poised over the start button on my watch which I always use to time my races. As the man raises the flag and fires the gun I start my watch and take off running, easily running ahead of the other girls.

"She's stupid for starting that fast with the big hill coming up." I hear a girl from another team mumble to her team mate. At the same time I hear all my team mates snickering at the comment, knowing full well I probably could have started the race faster.

We had done time trials last week, whoever ran faster was on varsity, everyone else on junior varsity. Liz and I being the fastest obviously made varsity along with five other girls, the rest were on JV.

I easily gain ground on all the other girls and ran up the "big" hill with ease. It was nothing compared to what I'd run up before, not to sound cocky or anything.

Fourteen and a half minutes later I cross the finish line, first for my team and first overall. My coach is standing at the end of the chute and congratulates me as I exit and hands me a water bottle.

Second place was Liz who crosses the finish line and makes her way through the chute two minutes later. A steady trickle of girls make their way through until everyone had finished. The last girl got a twenty-four.

My group runs over and crowds around me, giving me hugs and telling me good job. They make way so that Wes can get at me, but he awkwardly hangs back. He obviously hadn't told them that we weren't dating anymore.

Jess gives me an odd look questioning what was up between Wes and I, the other group looks curious as well but I shrug in way telling her I'd fill her in later.

They all file away towards the food stands and soon it's just Wes and I.

"Great job." He says, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Thanks." We don't talk for another few minutes, then we both start talking at the same time, turning our voices into a mixed up jumble. We share an awkward laugh. Then I begin again.

"I'm sorry Wes." I say. "I never should have broken up with you." Wes's face brightens up. "I was trying to stop things from getting messed up and I ended up making a mess anyways. And I shouldn't have pushed you away. I was just afraid, I've never been this close with a person before. I'm just afraid I'm going to fuck something up and get hurt."

"Trust me." Wes whispers and he pulls me into his arms and I don't object. He kisses my temple and just holds me.

"You probably don't want to hug me much longer, I'm sweaty and gross." I say, pulling away, but Wes pulls me back.
