Chapter Nineteen

Another day, another problem that I am stuck to deal with. On the bright side, Draco talked to his parents. That is, with my own motivation.

As soon as Draco told me what he overheard, I knew I had to do something to convince his parents that I'm not plotting against them. Thankfully, I have my ability to assist me with convincing Draco to have a conversation with them, or else the thought would have never crossed his mind.

I think that Draco is the person most scared of his parents out of everyone who knows of the Malfoys, so he would be the last person to have a one-on-one conversation with them. Fortunately for me, I know all the right things for him to say.

"Listen Draco, if you want me to survive the summer, you need to convince them that I am not plotting against them!" Draco's expression changes ever so slightly.

"Absolutely not Ivy. You know that I can't do that. I say one thing to them, father will burn me at the stake for the confrontation. I wasn't even supposed to hear them in the first place, so what do you think that they'll say when they find out I was listening to their private conversation?"  His voice is strained and he is out of breath by the time he's done talking.

He's never going to speak a word to his parents. Not unless I do something to persuade him to. I don't like that I have to resort to this, but it looks like that is my last option. "Draco my love," his eyes meet mine and soften. They become almost lifeless.

"For me, you need to speak with them... you will speak with them. It'll all be okay. All you have to do is tell them that you know me- that they know me. They know I'm not plotting against them and they know that even if I were, they are much more powerful than I am. They know I could never succeed."

His eyes bear only the thoughts I put behind them. "Of course, I would never want them to hurt you. I think this would be best," Draco involuntarily agrees with me. As if he has a choice.

I really do feel quite guilt, though. I have so much love for Draco, but I'm doing this for both of us. I doubt he has any idea of what his father has hidden beneath the library.

Just like that, Draco worked up the guts to talk to his mother and father. I left early from dinner yesterday, claiming to be feeling ill. Of course I was lying, but I had to give Draco the chance to speak to him alone. Surprisingly, Draco said all the right things, almost completely convincing his parents that I am innocent of what they think me as.

I just have to be sure to stay on my best behavior for the next couple of weeks. That means no more snooping and no more using my abilities- other than occolomency and such that are required if I want to survive.

This is all exactly what I told professor Snape in my letter to him. He agreed that I need to lay low for a bit to allow everything to cool down. I can't afford to get caught doing something I'm not supposed to while I'm living with the Malfoy's.

"Miss Draven, I'm glad to have run into you," Lucius says from behind me. I hide how much it startles me.

"Did you want to speak with me?" I ask, acting as if I'm oblivious. He's still suspicious of me.

"I was just curious if you've heard from Professor Snape about your new assistant position?" He's investigating. What's interesting to me is that he doesn't trust Snape...

Without hesitation I begin to speak. "Yes, we've spoken about the upcoming term and have come to a decision about how I could be of assistance to him." Lucius raises an eyebrow at my answer. His expression is... playful? I've never seen Lucius with this kind of look on his face.

"And what might that decision be?" He's trying to catch me in a lie.

"He's spoken to Professor Dumbledore regarding a free period for me to assist the second years." What I'm saying is the truth. Since Lucius was questioning me about assisting Snape, I figured the best choice was to tell him exactly what Snape instructed me to. I can't have anything going wrong.
