Warning: Sadness awaits

I had cheered up since meeting the legendary monster Shrek, seeing as I had food. I even stopped for some huckleberries! I can hear the kids of Irelton already, shrieking and running footsteps from their childish games. Strange, I thought. I didn't know you could hear them all the way out here.

And then it struck me. What if it's not children?

As soon as the thought struck me, I began to run. Sprinting faster and faster until I reached the break in the trees. Forgetting the rabbit, I sunk down to the ground.

Smoke clogged my lungs and fire roared across my vision. I could see tiny blurry figures dashing between houses, burning, falling, dying, disappearing in the heat or catching fire. Please. No. How could this have happened?! I should have been there to save them and protect them and keep them alive.  My mother. My father. My entire village.

A shout of "GET THEM!" yanked me out of my racing thoughts. They're coming for me next. I needed to run and hide and get away from them. I would get away from the  village and hide somewhere for a while. Then I would come back and get anything I could salvage. Yes. That was a solid plan.
