"Marc! It's almost dinner time!"
"Yeah I'm coming." He placed the pen down and shut his journal, placing it in his drawer. The man got up and walked downstairs to the rest of his group. "What shall we eat tonight?" The girl asked and looked through the cabinets. "Chicken? Or... Beans.. or.. Bread?" The boy walked over to the girl who was looking through the cabinets. "Is that all we have left?" "Yes, we will have to go to the store again." Panic went through Marc's head. They only had chicken, beans and bread left. That isn't enough to feed a group of 6 with for another month. The girl grabbed the chicken. "This is for 5 people." Marc walked back upstairs. "Alright, have a nice dinner." He got back into his room and grabbed his notebook again and continued writing that they didn't have enough food and that he had to go out again. Marc was startled by knocking on the door. He quickly shoved his journal under his pillow and told whoever was at the door to come in. It was the girl who was making dinner for everyone. "Marc, are you sure you don't want to eat? I'll gladly share some of my food with you." Marc shook his head. "No Kathy, I said loud and clear tha-" "But you'll go out tomorrow! You'll need it more than us!" "No! Kathy! I told you I don't nee-" "But Marc!" "KATHY I SAID NO!" Silence filled the room.
Marc was known to be short tempered, everyone knew that but it still hurt Kathy who was trying to do her best for her leader. Kathy broke the silence. "Alright fine, can I ask you a question?" He wasn't in the mood for questions, definitely not after Kathy kept pushing her opinions on Marc, but he wanted to know what she wanted. "If you're going to ask if you can come with tomorrow the answer is no." Kathy showed a smile. "That's not my question." "Alright, ask away." "What do you do up here? I walk into your room and you're either sitting at your desk or on your bed staring in front of you." Marc realised how stupid he must look. "I'm thinking about what I should do, Kathy. One day I might not make it back." Kathy sat down next to Marc. "What do you mean?" "I mean, one day, I'm going out to get food and maybe I'll won't back it back home." Marc slowly turned his head to her. "Do you understand what I mean?" Kathy slowly nodded her head and he slowly turned his head back to look in front of him.
"So you're scared to go out?" It took a few seconds before Marc answered. "Yes. Every time I have to go outside, this fear takes over my mind." Silence fell back between the two. "Why don't you let someone else go then?" A loud sigh came out of his nose. "Because I'm the leader of this group, I have to protect everyone who's here. That's my duty." Kathy felt stupid after asking it. "Well can't I-" "No." "But I can-" "No you can't." "Why won't you-" "BECAUSE I SAY SO! I AM THE LEADER HERE, NOT YOU, YOUR TASK IS TO STAY INSIDE AND DO WHATEVER I TELL YOU TO DO!" Marc realised he let himself go again. "I'm sorry." He sighed and Kathy shook her head. "No I'm sorry. I keep forgetting that I shouldn't play the hero." Marc smiled. "There's something I have to ask you, Kathy." He turns her head to her again. "Why do you care so much about me?" A blush came onto Kathy's face.
"Well, I don't know, I just care for everyone here." Marc knew she was lying but didn't tease her with the question any further. "Alright then." Kathy got a little closer to Marc, their shoulders are touching. "Be careful when you go out there alright?" She says. "Please don't see yourself as the hero of the story as well." Marc looked at her with a smile, not a big one, but a smile. "If I do die, you're going to be the next leader. If you want that and if you can carry that." Kathy's face lit up. "Of course!" "Well then, go downstairs and eat." Kathy got up and left his room, Marc grabbed his notebook again and wrote about his new decision of making Kathy the leader if he passed.
