THE FIRST DAY OF WORK. WAS I READY FOR IT? No, and yes. This was my first actual job and there was nothing that 'The Office' could teach me from it. Especially with a mood swing of a boss and a way too perky of a secretary. Trudging out of my bed at 6 and making it, something I wasn't used to at all, I took my time showering and washing my braids, making them look new and shiny even though they were only 3 weeks old. Brushing my teeth and putting on my new outfit, a tan blazer, and gray skirt along with my black bag where I had put in my binders and office supplies, I headed into the kitchen where an already awake Jada and a half-asleep Charles were praying. Hands together and eyes closed, I couldn't hear what they were saying from where I was standing. A few minutes had passed before they released their hands.
"Aniyah!" Jada exclaimed when she saw me as I entered the kitchen. She hands me a hot cup of coffee, steam coming up from the cup, and smiles at me. "Are you excited for today?"
I shrug as I take a sip from the cup, the taste burning my tongue at the heat.
"I should get going now," Charles announces and I feel ticked off. He had been avoiding almost every conversation with me and had hardly said more than a few words in total. I hadn't done anything bad and yet he continually acted as I did. Kissing Jada on the cheek and giving me a brief, cold hug, he leaves the house, the front door shutting and I take a look at the time on the stove before opening up the Uber app and ordering one. Hopefully, I would be able to get my first monthly paycheck soon so I would be able to save to buy my own ride. Taking the final sip from the cup and placing it in the sink, I grab a banana for lunch.
"I'll be praying for you," Jada states, and I nod at her, feeling my nervousness ease at her words.
"Thanks. And tell Faith and Grace I said hi," I reply before heading out the door but not before grabbing my coat and waiting outside at the same lamppost I had been not too long ago. It was hard to believe that I had been staying at Charle's house for almost a month (not that I was counting) and I had a job too. I almost wanted to head to James and laugh at his face. I didn't need that good-for-nothing jerk at all.
"Uber for Aniyah?" the driver in the approaching car had asked me and I nodded. It wasn't the same driver Sarah from last time unfortunately and this one seemed to keep to himself, a quiet man. Sitting in the back, I rearranged the supplies in my bag over and over again until they fit neatly along with my research of the area. I had been spending most of the weekend trying to figure out what to do with SFC and had brainstormed a few ideas thankfully with Jada's input every once in a while. The usual morning traffic was there today but luckily, it wasn't too much and at 7:45, I was already at the parking lot of SFC. Thanking the driver, I head inside the building where Alex was running around with papers back and forth and I watched in amusement.
"Aniyah you're here!" she cried out when she saw me and wasted no time in grabbing my wrist and calling for the elevator. Ding. The doors open and she pushes the both of us inside while I wonder why she was so urgent.
