Ch. 6
5:00 pm
Board games are great.
My family and I have always played them together.
I was surprised too, because this was distracting.
I could finally stop thinking about him.
"Sorry! But not sorry. I win. Again!" Damien jumps from the floor and starts dancing.
"My Gosh no need to rub it in ya brat." My dad laughs, the crow's feet prominent on his eyes.
They made me happy, my family.
We were picturesque but not phony.
We were genuinely happy.
At least I was lucky enough to have that.
"Does anyone want a refill?" Aunt Claire stands, collecting our cups.
I nod.
My mom turns to me, her light brown hair shining in the firelight.
Her eyes were always so kind.
"How are you doing Deedee?"
I widened my eyes at the old nickname.
"Is that nickname becoming a thing again? I'd rather it didn't." I smiled at her.
"What, little Deedee? You don't like it?" Dad poked my nose like I was two.
"Not necessarily. I feel like I'm an awkward ten year old."
They both just laughed at me.
Aunt Claire walks back in.
"The Egg Nog should be here by now-"
She's cut off by a knock on the door.
"Awe, there he is!"
Everyone is looking at the door.
And my heart stops.
Because he walks in.
