2:00pm
Two layovers later.
My aunt picks us up at the airport.
She’s the type to wear the ugly Christmas sweaters,
But they always make me think of her.
They’re Aunt Sweaters to me.
I’ve always liked London.
It’s very pretty here.
But I like Montana.
It’s where I was born and raised. It’s my home.
My Aunts house is a little yellow two story.
It’s quaint, but on the inside it’s very modern.
My Aunt always loved to decorate too, the house is pretty covered in Christmas joy.
Great.
Walking up to the top floor, my room is the first on the right.
I like my room here.
It has a Bay Window like at home.
Which means my routine won’t need to change much.
This room is also interesting because it’s shaped like an octagon.
But it’s purely white, and because the window above the bay seat is so large,
The room is constantly bathed in this angelic white light.
The views pretty great too.
There’s a gorgeous oak tree that stands about ten feet from the house.
I remember climbing it with my brother,
Even in the snow.
“Drew! Come down, we’re visiting.”
Going down the stairs, I see my family sitting on the couch.
Turning left into the living room, I sit down with them.
Damien hands me a hot cup of cocoa, and I smile thankfully at him.
“Oh Drew, how’ve you been sweet-girl? How’s school?”
I take off in my normal, tireless story about how school is great, 3.8 GPA, just got on break.
“And how’s that boyfriend of yours?”
My aunt’s face is smiling warmly at me.
I feel my body tense up.
My hands grip the cup.
I see the counter of his kitchen.
I see their bodies together.
The entire thing plays in my head.
A never ending seen in front of my eyes.
A squeeze on my shoulder brings me back, but I still feel the sting in my chest.
“We uh, we broke up.”
My mom turns to me Aunt, sensing that I don’t want to delve deeper.
“Oh Claudia, is that a new fire place? The clashing colors just look fantastic…”
My mom and my aunt drone on about interior décor.
My brother and father turn on the TV, watching some wrestling show.
And my mind wanders.
I stare at the wall.
And my mind goes off again.
