Some people chose to clock out for the night, some decided to take a late bath, Chigiri still sat in the corner doing his hair, and me, I just couldn't sleep! The lights went out as I tossed and turned in my futon.
'Goddamn prodigies up there in A team must be livin' the life of luxury with king sized beds huh?'
I rose up, and quietly tiptoed my way around everyone, exiting the room. Instinctively, I started making my way towards the empty soccer field. Even though I'd much rather be asleep, maybe Ego was right. Winning really does have me fired up!
"Oh, hey (y/n)."
"Isagi?" We stopped before each other in front of the door to the field. "Funny running into you again."
"Right? You couldn't sleep either huh?"
"Nope. You too?"
"Not at all. After today's game, I really want to get better as soon as possible." He said.
"I feel the same way." I smiled. The door, finally sensing our presence, slid open, revealing Bachira, standing with one foot on top of a ball.
"I knew you would come, my precious Ryosuke killers."
"We're not your partners in crime or anything, Bachira." I laughed.
"I'm joking, joking. Still, the monster inside me told me to come here and wait, so I did, and here you are. I really like you two you know." He smiled.
"Monster..?" Isagi asked. "What's that?"
"I wanna know too." I said, taking a step forward.
"When I'm playing soccer, the monster comes out and talks to me. 'Score a goal, weave through...'" He started, kicking the ball over to Isagi.
I ran towards Bachira to create a two on one, with the two of us stopping Isagi from scoring a goal. The two of them remained head to toe as I kept my distance in case Isagi broke through.
Bachira paused his movement for a moment. "But when I had the ball, with just a few seconds left on the clock, the monster said to me, 'Make sure Isagi gets the ball. There's a monster inside of him just like you.'"
Bachira managed to steal the ball, turning back towards me. It was my turn to stop him one on one. We ran side by side, me trying my best to keep him in place, not moving another step towards the goal.
Then, he paused, grabbing my arm, and looking deep into my eyes. "But for some reason, to accomplish that, my instincts told me to kick the ball as hard as I could towards you. It's just a hunch but, there's a monster in you too, isn't there, (Y/n)."
Our momentum stopped completely. His eyes stared to the very center of my being. "I think the best strikers have a monster in them, so..." He kicked the ball high up in the air. "I'm glad I came here, because I got to meet the two of you."
The play stopped completely as the 3 of us stood in a triangle formation, just a few feet away from each other. The ball came hurtling towards the ground. "Welp, let's try again, yeah? Come at me with all you've got!" Bachira smiled.
"Alright!" Me and Isagi smiled.
I relaxed a bit. I didn't overwhelm myself with all the complicated rules of soccer, all of the forms that have been drilled into my head ever since I started playing. I let my body flow, finding the optimal way to reach the ball in an almost animalistic manner. It was me and Isagi vs Bachira, me and Isagi finding new ways to come together to trap Bachira and give each other a chance to score.
I became more accustomed to passing and receiving the ball, how it felt against the ball of my foot all the way to the tip of my toes. I found ways to receive the ball using other parts of my body, and how to guard the ball as I traveled towards the goal.
