The first thing she happened to learn was that she did not magically become better at Transfiguration over the summer. After a period in Herbology — in which they revised all about Mandrakes — Raya entered the Transfiguration class feeling pretty confident. The second she saw the word Lapifors written on the board, she was temped to crawl back into her bed and cuddle with Loki.
"Sit," Thomas dragged her into a seat next to Cedric before taking his own seat next to Elias.
"Tried to leave class so you could cuddle the cat?" Cedric asked knowingly.
"Yeah," she muttered.
"I don't blame you," he said. "I was about to do that the second I walked in. I don't like rabbits."
"The Lapifors Spell," Professor McGonagall entered the classroom from seemingly nowhere, causing Cedric to jump. Her eyes travelled across the third year Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, finally settling on Raya. "Raya, do you have any idea on what the spell is about?"
"Uh," Raya looked at Cedric, but he was busy staring at the ceiling. She cleared her throat, "It's a transforming spell used on small objects to turn them into rabbits. Some people can classify it as a jinx, but most consider it a small transfiguration spell."
"Correct," McGonagall said. "Ten points to Ravenclaw."
She walked around to her desk, pulling out a small box. Flicking her wrist, she chanted, "Lapifors." A green-ish light shot out, surrounding the box. When it passed, a small brown bunny was in it's place.
Cedric backed away, trying to put as much space between himself and the bunny as possible.
"It's a simple spell," Professor McGonagall continued. She flicked her wrist again, turning the bunny back into a small box, and giving a small item to each person. "Practice the spell on your object. Everyone will present this spell tomorrow. Next week, we will begin our unit on Animagi, and I'd like you to be comfortable with working with animal spells."
The class began to chant, everyone hoping for a rabbit to appear.
"I hate this," Cedric muttered, staying away from the other students. "What if a rabbit jumps on me?"
"Cedric, calm down," Raya told him. "If a bunny comes close, I'll take care of it. I'm not gonna let it near you, okay?"
"Are — are you gonna kill it?" he whispered.
"No. What?" Raya shook her head. "I just mean that I'm not scared of them. I'll grab it and take it away."
"Oh, okay," he relaxed a bit.
Raya rolled her eyes slightly, turning back to her box.
Since it was illegal for her to perform magic outside of Hogwarts, she wasn't able to get any practical Transformation in this summer. She would've read over the textbooks, but with the Greek Trireme competition and spending time with Luke, there was just no way she could fit it into her schedule.
She wasn't horrible at Transfiguration, but she was nowhere near Ravenclaw level either. Elias — even though he was a Muggleborn — was the best in their year. Raya needed to ask him for some tips.
She flicked her wand, "Lapifors."
Her wand sparked green, but the box remained the same.
Cedric tried on his own box, having no reaction whatsoever.
