I sighed as the sounds of police sirens and the panicked sounds of James' whimpering filled the air. "It wasn't me," He kept on muttering, "It wasn't I swear, this is treachery," His eyes were wild, as he looked down the hallway, in wait for the approaching officers. And soon enough, they came. He squirmed where he was, in a pathetic attempt to keep up his facade. "Officers, officers! Unlock this at once! I won't stand for any of this!" The police froze as their gazes shifted from me to James. "How dare he frame me? A detective of all people?" The police were hesitant, one of them started muttering to another under their breath. I froze.
Wait, do they believe him?
I didn't expect something like this to go this way, but I can't just give up like this. I paused to think. Do I have evidence? Anything in particular. I noticed Jack eyeing me, as I thought. But as he noticed that I had noticed, he quickly averted his gaze. He kneeled down and decided to distract himself with his mask. I chuckled under my breath as I continued to brainstorm.
Wait. His mask.
I remember now, I took off the mask from my face observing the front. I felt the ruby gemstones outlining the left eye. There was something special about this mask the first time I got it. I snapped one of the "rubies" off, revealing it to be only a cover. At the sight, James' mouth fell agape. So, we found a way to sit all of us down and play everything in the Theatre room. James unlocked and now tied up with a rope to one of the leather seats. As each second passed, James seemed to get more and more on edge. Eventually, he stood up, his chair clattering behind as it fell on its side. Before the officers, nor I, could get up James ran back throwing his mask at the glass case of the fire alarm, pulling it. He laughed loudly as the alarms rang, the sprinklers turning on with a mechanical whir. How did he get out? I looked back down at the abandoned rope, a small pocketknife abandoned next to it. Of course. I reached for my gun but when I did it was empty. I looked at everyone else, the water pouring down on their heads. Jack looked at me with a shrug. James has my gun. Shit. I looked over to the officers who couldn't move at all. These useless idiots. I grabbed one of the officers' guns, running after them. I heard Jack call out to me, but it was just a muffled sound at that moment.
The sound of screaming guests got louder as I neared the ballroom. The alarms loud in my ears, the slowly forming puddles on the floor splashing as my footsteps hit the ground. I was lost, going in any direction. I had lost sight of him. I cursed under my breath. Then I heard a separate pair of footsteps aside from mine approaching me. I turned around the gun in my hands up in a position ready to shoot, but it was just Jack.
"I can help," he said, panting in between his words. He was the closest person to James. I nodded, letting him take the lead. "Follow me," Before waiting for a reply he ran off to the right wing of the palace, making his way up a spiral staircase. By then everyone else was probably escorted outside, the servants looking for where the fire was. I continued to follow Jack where a door led to a walkway connecting two towers. The water hasn't dried, making every gust of wind a stab of cold going throughout my entire body. Surprisingly, there was James, cut off, unknowing that the door to the other tower was locked. I stepped in front of Jack smiling a thank you at him. He nodded towards me as I turned back to James who looked scared, but that passion to escape still burned brightly behind those wide eyes.
"There's nowhere to run James!" I yelled over the howling wind. He looked frantic for an escape, looking every which way for a place to run. I slowly made my way towards him, "Just turn yourself in, and all will be fine," I continued to say. He seemed to calm down, staring me directly in the eyes. He mouthed something, something that told me that something was terribly wrong.
'I won't let anyone win, not this time,' And with that he hurled himself off the edge of the walkway.
"JAMES!!". I heard Jack scream as we both ran to the edge. But he was already gone, blood pooling around him, James Yael had fallen to his death.
As the dawn approached a week later, I woke up head aching. Jack had been staying with me after his brother's death. He told me he was more distraught than he thought he would be. The Queen is still in mourning. Yet all loose ends have been tied. It turned out James had always had an inferiority complex to his family, especially his brother Jack Yael. James had found a way to push everyone away from Jack, isolating him for free manipulation over his brother. The Queen sat back and didn't realize anything, which proves that everyone has a dark side including someone like her. James already stole everything from Jack. But it just wasn't enough. He had to steal to become rich, to feel power. And he did, for a little while, before he chose death over the shame of being arrested. But with the evidence my camera had captured, the case was closed. James was right, this wasn't a loss, but this wasn't a win either. For any of us. It will take a while before Jack and maybe even I will be able to recover from what we saw that night.
I walked into the kitchen, looking for something to eat. Jack walked into the room yawning, brewing two cups of coffee. I grabbed a cream cheese bagel, ripping a chunk off with a single bite. I suppose it has been odd rooming with someone who I had thought to be a murderer only over a week ago. It wasn't only me, I noticed Jack was trying to get used to not having his brother around when James controlled most of his life. But I've gotten used to his face, and it's strangely becoming comforting in a way. I hope he feels the same way.
"Why're you staring at me so much? Did I do something?" He chuckled in a deep morning voice, handing me one of the mugs of coffee. I immediately avoided his gaze, bringing the cup to my lips and shrugged.
"I dunno," I muttered. At that he laughed and turned away. "Oh right, I'm going to be at the office today, so you'll be home alone for most of the day," I didn't want to be off of work for so long, but the Queen insisted after what I've seen that I take a week of break. I can't blame her. Jack nodded.
"Yeah, you're fine, I'll take a few walks outside myself," he said with the wave of his hand, walking away. I frowned, taking another bite of my bagel.
"Don't get lost," I yelled after him as I heard his bedroom door shut. Well, what used to be a guest room, but I suppose he's a guest? I don't know. I checked the time, grumbling realizing that I had to leave soon, or I would be late. "Bye!" I yelled, hoping he would hear but not expecting any kind of answer. I shrugged on my jacket, making sure I had my keys and essentials. I took one last sip of my coffee and ran out the door.

Helloo, author here
This is the end of the story. At least all I have planned for now. I might include more cases that Jack and Flynn can solve together someday. But I have turned my attention to other works and I apologize deeply for all of the long breaks. I also apologize if this story seems a little rushed. I love these kinds of stories yet sometimes passions can fade away over time. Though I feel like if I have an idea I can write it down. If theres anything wrong or something I can change just tell me in the comments. I want to thank you so much for reading. To the few people who read this, you fuel my passion for writing. This is my first finished long story. Thank you for being here. <3
Sincerely, fujo.
