I threw my keys into a desk drawer as I paced around my small apartment. Why did he say that? Friends? I barely even know him! Was he even being serious? My memory panned back to his expression. Damn it. That’s not even the worst thing. I replayed the memory in my head.
“Excuse me, we’re going to have to ask you what you were doing there,” An officer pulled out a pen and notepad. I rolled my eyes, I didn’t have time for this. I was sitting down on a bench in front of the glass complex on the left of the broken down building. A police officer stood in front of me, his large shadow engulfing me in a dark bubble.
“Alright, listen up. I was there because I got a note from JY to go there. Before you ask, I am a detective for the Oreil District.” The officer frowned at his notepad. “Yes, it’s a place. It’s off the coast of Irivin.”
“So JY…was here?” He asked me. I nodded “Say, what did he look like?” He held his pen on the paper, ready to write. I paused.
“I..I couldn’t see him well,”
Why? Why did I say something so stupid? Couldn’t see him well? Yeah right, I saw him as clear as day. I continued pacing, do I regret it? No? Maybe? Ugh I don’t know!
Another alarm blared from my phone. 6:00 PM? What would I do at 6 PM? That’s when I remembered. There is a masquerade banquet at the Queen’s palace tomorrow. I’m not exactly sure how I got invited, but my friend said he had pulled a couple strings. I set some alarms a day earlier so I can get my clothes and items ready for the next day. I sighed directing my feet towards my bedroom.
I picked out a black button down with grey dress pants, a dark red blazer going over the top. Not too shabby, I must say. I smiled at myself with pride. I grabbed a leather case from under my bed, blowing off the dust on the top. Carefully, I undid the golden latches, and opened it up slowly. Inside was a feathered black mask with rubies and black onyx gemstones lining the side. Beautiful, I placed it next to the outfit I laid out. Alright, I’m set.
The next day, I was walking through the city streets. The usual honking and yelling I hear everyday. I’m just trying to get my coffee. Well- I was, until I noticed a mob of people outside the coffee shop I usually go to. What’s going on? I walked closer trying to see what was going on inside. I couldn’t see, people swarmed and blocked my view. I was shoved backwards as I struggled to keep my balance. It was loud, too loud. I rolled my eyes as I passed the coffee shop. I’m just going to get some work done. I walked into the agency, mostly empty at this time of day as always. As I got through my office door, I noticed someone sitting in the chair in front of my desk. She stood up, taking off her hat as a signal of respect. I smiled, nodding to her as well. But then I saw her face, she was elderly, blonde hair fading to gray with age, on her purse was the royal family crest… The Queen! I immediately bowed, regretting not doing so earlier. “I’m sorry your highness, that was rude of me,” I said. Her hand reached to pat my shoulder as she laughed softly.
“No, it’s alright. Please, just call me Mrs. Yael. I’m only the Queen when it comes to it. I’m no Queen right now,” I lifted my head and gave her a smile.
“Alright then, Mrs. Yael,” I walked over to the other side of my desk, “How may I help you today?” She smiled widely.
“Well, I was holding a party today,” She started, I nodded knowing what she meant, but confused on where she’s going with this. “And I’m wondering if you would like to come,” I paused, laughing slightly. “Say, what’s funny?” She smiled a bit confused.
