"look sherlock, we'll get enola out. i'm sure eudoria and edith know about it already anyway. i'll stop by edith's and talk to her about it." i reassure him as we make our way towards edith's."i know. i hope edith can give us some information on how to get her out." we walk into the shop and gravitate toward the staircase. as we get to the top, a creak from one corner of the room fills the silence.
"have you any sense of what time it is?" edith scoffs from the dark side of the room.
"hello edith." sherlock says, turning around.
"you're lucky. i almost broke both of your legs. hello constance, sherlock. then i recognized the shoulders. you have very recognizable shoulders."
"enolas been arrested." sherlock and i state in unison.
"for why?"
"murder." i say quietly. "what she's got tangled with, it may go wider than we thought. and there's something about this case that-"
"deduction alone will not solve?" edith asks, walking closer to us.
"we may need your- we need your help." sherlock says.
"well, like my mother always said, 'those who can turn to others when they're in need are the truly brave amongst us."
"your mith sounds very different to mine." he looks around at the office.
"same."
"i did try to stop her, but she's full of.. this fight."
"you can't control enola holmes. she's a force of nature. a law unto herself. just like constance.
sherlock chuckles at this statement, looking down at me.
"yes, she is and i fear she will hang." i say quietly.
THE NEXT DAY
"hurry eudoria, pick up the pace constance!" edith yells to us as we climb into the back of the carriage that is full of explosives.
"you know, it's wonderful to meet you constance. i remember enola talking about you. every know and then. she is in love with your brother, viscount?" eudoria smiles at me, her hair blowing wildly and freely through the wind as the carriage picks up speed.
"oh yes. i could tell. she went to a ball with him and he confessed his love with a fan. he never told her what it meant though, so i am guessing he is waiting for the perfect moment to tell her." i explain, looking out into the vast forest engulfing our carriage.
"i heard about you and sherlock as well. my dear constance, make sure you keep sherlock in check. he picked a wonderful lady." the cart comes to an abrupt stop.
"let's go hurry!" edith calls. i grab an explosive and some matches and set it next to the prison wall i light it and run when the wall explodes. edith walks through and drags enola out. i hear edith's muffled voice when the door swings open and enola climbs in.
"tis i!" eudoria and i exclaim together. enola gasps as the carriage shoots off.
"oh it is good to see you." eudoria smiles at her daughter. "hang on!" she yells at the roughness of the path.
"there into us!" edith screams through an open window.
"so, thus case of yours, how's it going?" i ask, pulling a match from the box, tossing it to eudoria.
"i don't know. i was trying to help a girl find her sister, and i've made things worse."
"nonsense! you stirred up a hornet's nest. you are onto something."
"STANDBY!" edith yells.
"why else would they try and silence you?" i ask, tossing a smoke bomb to the older lady, who lights it quickly. "don't worry. it's completely harmless." i smile.
"on your left!"
"my left or yours?"
"yours!"
she tosses it out the window and it hits the ground, creating a smoke cloud around the guards chasing closely behind us. we change our trail and get another one ready if needed.
"this match factory, what do you know about it?"
"it's a roaring success." enola says out of breath. "in two years it's doubled its profits. and now there's typhus."
"typhus?" we ask together.
"i see why that gets on sherlock's nerves now." eudoria laughs, looking back at her daughter, signaling her to continue her story.
"yes the girls are going down with it. they're dying." she explains.
"that's a loose thread."
"what?" as she says this, edith yells once again.
"they're back! here they come! brace yourselves!"
the two carts collide, skidding off the road. eudoria continues to explain this to her daughter as i set the next smoke bomb.
"we know things about these factories. girls like sarah chapman, they're expendable. they go missing, too often, they die. no one cares. but this girl, they care about, and greatly. so, what does she know?" the woman helps the girl connect the dots without telling her straight up. i stick a match in between my teeth and set up the smoke bomb before striking it on the bench seat.
"she stole something. some papers."
"aha! so what's she going to do with them? what's her plan? she's not a thief. she's not a blackmailer. she is a troublemaker. she knows something and that is infinitely more dangerous." i explain, opening the window to throw the bomb out.
"stand by to the right!"
"would you mind?" i passed the bomb to enola.
"wait for it. wait for it. NOW!" she throws it out, landing directly in the carriage foothold.
that girl had nice aim.
