The Day of Thanks Festival was approaching as November was coming to a close.
And I knew what this meant- I was going to see Abel Mathis again.
For The Day of Thanks, multiple royal families from surrounding countries came together and had a feast- and this time it was going to be in Samaria- at the Castle.
Things on campus were...stable. Valerie Maddow seemed extra annoyed- and I completely avoided her when I was around her. I was utterly digested by her outburst to Anna and wanted nothing to do with her.
Anytime I saw Headley at the Castle, I had to act cordial to her, but when we saw each other on campus, she always gave me a dirty look.
Ellie took notice. "Why does your future sister in law look like she wants to kill you?"
We were walking on campus to our last class, and I had the displeasure of seeing Headley.
"She wanted me to be in cahoots with her to ruin Valerie Maddow's life. I said no."
Ellie chuckled, "Headley can try. Does she know who she is dealing with though? Lucy, I know you didn't go to prep school with all of us- but even though they were a year older than me, I saw what Valerie was capable of. How she treated other students. She is ruthless. Headley wouldn't be able to even come close to her. I mean, clearly- Valerie punched her in the face."
"I wonder why Valerie is so mean." I said, "I mean, her family is...you know her family. They're all ruthless. But Valerie is just unpleasant. She seems mad at the world."
"Maybe she is." Ellie said, "You never know the demons someone is fighting."
Ellie gave me a pointed look- and I nodded in agreement.
"I know that firsthand." I said.
"I know." Ellie gave me a sad smile. "At least we will have each other at the Day of Thanks dinner. You know what the big talk of the dinner is going to be, right?"
"I haven't heard anything." I said, "Did something happen?"
"Duchess Abel Mathis is getting married." Ellie said, "Apparently to a socialite's daughter."
I stopped in my tracks.
"Are you okay?" Ellie stopped next to me.
"You're telling me that Abel Mathis is getting married?" I looked at Ellie.
She looked confused. "Yes. Why does it matter? I know Abel doesn't seem like the type to settle down. But apparently they've been courting since June."
I felt my breath hitch.
I hooked up with Abel in September.
"You're right. Abel just isn't the type to settle down." I said, and plastered on a smile, "Let's go to class."
All I knew was that I needed to find out more information about Abel Mathis and her supposed engagement.
I knew who I could ask about it- my brother, Ken. As someone who will be the King one day- hopefully a day that is far, far away- he tends to keep up with the news. Not just Samaria, but other nations around.
When I got home from school, I was about to go searching for him- until I overheard him and my mother speaking in the dining room.
"I think it would be the right thing to do to the public eye." Ken said, "Listen mother, the Maddow family will probably deny an invite to our Day of Thanks dinner. But it will look good if word gets out that we offered to celebrate together. Especially now that everyone knows Valerie punched my future wife, it would be a good look for it to seem like everything is fine."
