I've always kind of hated guns. It's cheating! Just, hear me out. When it's just you and the other person getting ready to have an intense fight, you actually get to contact that person, feel their fears and worries. But when a person suddenly pulls out a gun out of nowhere, it's so fucking annoying. At that point you can't do anything else than pull out your gun faster and shoot the person in front of you. Now where is the fun in that? I didn't learn anything new nor did I enjoy it. And that's what it is. All. Day. Ruined.
"You better stop doing that", Yelena's voice brings me back to reality. I zoned out again.
"I know."
"It's creepy."
This has been happening too many times lately. It's either zoning out until something distracts me or anxiety attacks. They are even worse, but I'm keeping them under control for now. "Is it time yet?", I ask chewing my gum, starting to get already bored.
"Let's go!", seeing Yelena disappearing in the tunnel I quickly pull out my cliffhanger and place it right in the corner of the roof waiting for my signal.
"Hurry up", I command as I take a look at my clock. It has already been almost a minute and if we don't hurry up the whole mission might fail. I start to get anxious as I don't get any answer form her. I can only hear Yelena fighting through my earbud. I spit out my gum and keep looking at my clock. If I don't get an answer in ten seconds we'll have problems. My heartbeat starts raising but I take a deep breath, trying to control my nerves.
"I'm done here, heading to the parking lot now. Go!", I let out a breath of relief once I hear her answer and don't think twice as I jump from the roof and slide down the windows. On the 15th floor I stop. I get ready to jump as far away as I can from the window so I can shoot it before breaking in through it. As I break through the window, I end up in the middle of a long hallway. I untouch the wires from my body and pull out my gun for safety.
Moving towards the main office I hear whispering, so I blend in with the wall next to the door. The whisper-yelling from behind the wall becomes louder and I can barely put any words together but I hear something: "NO...absolutely NOT...where...they...NO...check then!" suddenly I hear steps coming towards the door and I take a step back, still being my back next to the wall. The door opens and a tall, muscular figure with a bald head comes out. Before he can notice me I quickly shoot him in the head, knowing for sure it wasn't my target. "What the fuck?", I hear cursing coming from inside the room and immediately recognize the voice. Entering a huge conference room I shoot my eyes on my target, Mark Wilson.
"Can't really say I missed you Mark", his face turns as white as the wall next to us is. I can see the horror in his eyes filling up with tears. "Please, don't do this..."
"Don't worry, I'm gonna make it quick", smirk filling my lips I point my gun towards his head as he starts sobbing. "Please...you want money, right? I can get you anything!", "Are those really gonna be your last words?", this seems almost too easy, but I don't let my thoughts to overthinking. I have to get the job done. So I move my finger to the trigger and the moment I press it, something hard suddenly hits my gun making me shoot entirely in the wrong direction. I lose my balance and take a few steps back. I shoot my gaze to the right and point my gun to the same direction, ready to shoot.
"You gotta be fucking kidding me right now", I say and sigh as I recognize the famous face in front of me, Steve fucking America. Rolling my eyes from him back to my target, I notice that he has disappeared. Again, just like last time. I see him running out of the room towards the stairs that leads into the parking lot. Fortunately Yelena is already there so I don't have to start running after him right away. "Lena, Mark's running right into your embrace", I inform my sister and shoot at Steve five times but he hides behind his shield. "On it", once I hear a response from her I draw my attention back to Steve.
"Are you gonna move?", I eye him up and down.
"Can we sort things out first?", he answers as he peeks out from behind his shield.
"No"
"Then no"
"Alrighty then", not wasting any more time I kick his shield aside with my foot and try to shoot him to his leg but he gets a grab of my hands and move them up so I end up shooting at the ceiling. As he's hands are occupied I quickly kick his tibia as hard as I can, which makes his hold of my hands loosen. I take an advantage of that and shoot him on his thigh but he moves so the bullet manages to only hit him partly. As he grabs his leg in pain I quickly slide past him and run to the garage.
As I open the door and enter the garage the first thing I see being Mark flying over the windshield of the car Yelena is driving. He lands on the cold, uneven garage floor and tries desperately to crawl away as I walk towards him. I push him with my foot so he rolls over to his back and without hesitation, I point my gun to his head stepping on his chest. "I told you it could have been nice and easy this time." locking my eyes with his, placing my finger on the trigger, I stop, as I hear a voice coming from behind my back.
"Irina, wait!" I freeze, chills covering my entire body, not being able to move a muscle. That voice fills my whole body with horror and shock. I lock my eyes with Mark's again and pull the trigger before I start getting any flashbacks. "Irina NO!" still not turning back, I pull out my phone and take a picture of now dead Mark, lying in front of me. As I send it forward to my client and receive immediately promised payment, I take a deep breath and text Yelena that she can pick me up. As she pulls up next to me in our car I walk towards the passenger door not looking back for a second.
"Irina I-"
"Nat are you okay, I heard a gunshot!?" Steve's panicked voice fills the whole garage. Not wanting to face the person that broke me in pieces, I get into the car and slam the door behind me as Yelena drives far away.
...
The second I slam the door I stretch towards the hatch between the driver's and the passenger's seat. I open it, dig out my joint and put it in my mouth as I look for my lighter. "Seriously?" Yelena turns her head and gives me a worried look.
"Since when we are judging?" I ask as I still look for my lighter. "I'm not, I just think we should process what just happened. Soberly." I find my lighter under my seat and light up my joint, closing my eyes and letting the smoke fill my lungs. "There's no need for such a thing."
"Well don't you think we should at least talk about this or make a plan since she seems to be in the same city as us all of the sudden?" I bend my seat back and bring the joint to my lips again. "We should, but not now, later."
