Dazai Osamu is a prodigy.
He isn't so vain as to have been the first person to say that about himself, but he never denied it. He was a smart child, despite being orphaned as an infant. He excelled in standardized tests that determined his grade point, and could outwit the stupid adults that worked at the orphanage by the time he could speak. He has a silver tongue and a iron will, though his resolve may as we be diamond for how impossible it is to break and the way it fractures any light that attempts to penetrate his darkened soul. He is an enigma, a genius, and those two things compounded together make him into a most terrifying adversary.
A boy so brilliant and cold and twisted would always be doomed to end up in the wrong crowd, but Dazai did not merely join them. No, he conquered them in less than two years, shooting through the ranks with unprecedented might to become the youngest executive in the Port Mafia's history.
The first omega to make it to that level, as well.
His secondary gender, of course, is a secret kept under the most secure lock and key. No one suspects a young mafia executive with such a penchant for killing to be an omega, and with the careful schedule of suppressants, he never suffers a heat. He is merely perceived by his fellows as a frighteningly level headed alpha.
Mori is the only one in the higher rankings that knows about it, and that is simply because he is the one filling his suppressant supply. He never told anyone, because he knows if he did, Dazai would tell everyone about exactly what happened in the old boss's bedroom, and peel back the wallpaper to expose the old stain there. They are keepers of each other's terrible secrets, holding guns with bullets in a ready grip to fire before the other one dared. A constant showdown, to see which one of them would crack first.
But, somehow, neither of them crack.
Somehow, Dazai's secret gets out on its own.
A man named Oda is the reason for the small spill.
Dazai never intended to ever pursue any romantic relationships, especially within the Port Mafia itself, and especially not any relationship that would become sexual. His status as an omega would be exposed, and, besides, he doesn't have time for a relationship anyway. He is much too busy making, planning, and closing deals for the mafia, whipping subordinates into shape, and maintaining his own charade to worry about things like mates. He doesn't care.
Oda makes him care.
Oda, who smells of sharp, harsh spice when he gets irritated and cumin powder when he stays calm. Oda, who smiles and listens and speaks calmly and teaches Dazai what it feels like to have a goal in life; a purpose. He teaches Dazai how to let his guard down, and one night, after they had left the bar and Ango had walked ahead, Dazai is found rooted to the spot when lips that taste like curry and bourbon take his.
Oda apologizes, admitting it was improper for him to have done that, both as a subordinate to the younger man and as another alpha. Dazai had been so immediately hooked on the sensation, the closeness, that he finds himself wanting more as soon as Oda pulls away. And because Dazai always takes what he wants, he grabs the fabric of his collar to wrinkle it in the tight grip of a shaking hand and pulls him down to kiss him again. And then, whispering lightly against his lips, where no one but Oda can possibly hear, he says, "I'm not an alpha."
The rest, as they say, is history.
Naturally, Dazai had threatened Oda not to reveal his secret, to which the former killer had given a small smile as easy cumin filled the small amount of air between them.
"I'd never tell. There's nothing to be gained from it. No one would believe me, anyway. You're more of an alpha than half the mafia, Dazai."
Dazai's second gender, however, isn't their only secret.
