Dazai expected Mori to act fast, after the incident with Akutagawa.
Dazai is in the office when it happens. Kunikida is lecturing Ranpo about getting off his ass and getting to work for some murder investigation at the river, Tanizaki is being strong-armed into letting Naomi hand-feed him one of the heart shaped cookies from Uzumaki, Kenji is chatting with Yosano about what kinds of plants would look nice in the office since spring is bleeding into summer, Dazai is standing by the printer waiting for pages of his own report about yesterday's attack to finish printing, and Koko is hugging his leg whining because Atsushi still hasn’t shown up for work today, even though it’s almost noon.
The front door suddenly flies inward, and Dazai smells sharp tobacco and camellia blossoms.
“Our apologies for not making an appointment. And we forgot to knock.”
Hirotsu.
He expected him to act fast, but Dazai didn’t expect Mori to send the Black Lizards the next morning.
Armed assailants flood the space, and Dazai has the brief moment to recognize that the situation is grim, but he’s currently unarmed, listening to the printer clatter as it spits out more paper in the tense silence. He watches guns raise, safeties click off, Hirotsu raises a finger-
He grabs Koko.
The nursery is straight across from the printer he’s at, and he knows that he hasn’t been spotted yet, thanks to the angle and the room divider. He can sprint straight into the nursery, and by the time he’s inside, the gunfire has started, and it’s easy to slam the door amid the cover of the noise. Koko inhales sharply, her eyes wide, but Dazai crushes her against his chest and presses his back against the wall beside the door. He holds her close, fights hard to keep his scent under control, and waits for the sound of gunfire and breaking windows and shouts of pain to stop.
To send in the Black Lizards…
Mori isn’t fucking around.
To send in the Black Lizards is to send in the Grim Reaper himself. He knows firsthand just how bloodthirsty Hirotsu can be when he’s on the job; how he takes an order to heart and has never once failed. Dazai hadn’t gotten a good look, but he could swear Gin and Tachihara had been with him too, meaning that Mori isn’t going to take this lightly. No one is supposed to survive. No one will.
The gunfire stops.
Koko whimpers, trembling in his arms. “Ma-”
“Shh,” he hushes quickly, stroking a hand against the back of her head to try to soothe her. Despite his best efforts, his scent is turning dark and burnt. Slowly, he sets her down, nudging her towards the nest. “Hide.”
She sniffs, but doesn’t hesitate as she crawls among the blankets and pillows, hiding beneath a plush red throw. He tries not to think about the fact that it’s the same color as blood.
There are footsteps coming towards the nursery.
He doesn’t have a weapon. He doesn’t carry one; he never did even when he was with the Port Mafia. But there are colored pencils on the floor, and he grabs a handful of them in his fist, standing beside the door, readying himself. With enough force, the pencils will be able to pierce skin, and if he can manage to break splinters off into the wound, he could create internal bleeding-
