Chapter 1

Day 42,537

Today is a rather erratic day; the sun was peeking through the dreary clouds. I live in Biloxi, Mississippi, with a population of 44,054. Days here usually are gloomy and ceaseless. Today looked like a day that held opportunity, even hope. Something that I haven't possessed since year 50, day 18,250.That was the year I realized; every day was the same as the next and the one before.  Nothing stuck out or was different than anything in the past days. There was no way to pretend I was normal.

My name is Damen. I am currently 116 years and 17 days old. I am immortal, unable to die. I might be 116 years old but I looked like a 17 year old. That's what those around me that aren't immortal think I am. There aren't many of my kind, but one quality we share is hatred for life. We have not lived these years. We have existed. I find no enjoyment in going through the motions day after day.  Everything become tedious, it's like living in a rut that never ends.  Today was the same as all the rest, going to a restaurant and resenting those who appear happy.

As I walked into Billy's Tavern I spotted a new group of teenagers around my "age". They were seated near my usual spot. There were 5 of them, two men and three women. As I neared my seat I observed them, one in particular. She had long brown hair and a button nose. Her body was one of an angel. She had curves in all the right places and stood as if she had the world right where she wanted it. I sat down and ordered my usual, root beer with extra ice.

I could feel her eyes bore into the side of my head. I turned and saw what I had never expected. She was approaching me. We made eye contact and I obtained my first chance to see her eyes. That's when my existence changed. Her eyes were unique and unlike any other that I had ever seen before. They were a pale, vivid green with layer of dark surrounding them. What I saw in her eyes behind the color was something I never expected. I saw hurt, care, compassion and curiosity.

Out of all the years I have come here not once has anyone ever talked to me. Humans aren't supposed to be with my kind, we would put them in to much danger. The nameless beauty made her way to a bar stool near me. She was even more breath taking up close. Freckles lightly scattered on the tip of her nose. While her light skin made her eyes shine even more than they should have.

"Hi, my name's Blake" she said interrupting my thoughts. Her voice was soft and comforting. Like everything was going to be okay even if it's really not. "...well my friends saw you over here and told me to talk to you. So, I'll just let you be if you want." she said questioningly. When I failed to respond to her, to hypnotize by her voice, she started to walk away.

"Wait!" I all but yelled trying to get her to stop. I just couldn't let her go. Blake slowly stopped and turned around waiting for me to finish. "Would you like to sit and talk with me?"

She glanced back at her friends then looked back at me. "Yeah, I would love that." She smiled a crooked smile showing all her teeth. She haltingly made her way back onto the stool.

"My name is Damen by the way'" I offered my hand in which she shook without hesitation.
