He didn't understand why they were fighting. Well at the same time, maybe he did. Maybe he had been denying it to himself just as much as they were.

A husband and a wife were supposed to love each other, and only each other. He understood that they were fighting because they were both seeing other people. But why would they?

That's what Austin failed to understand.

Wasn't it just last summer that he and his family went on a road trip to Colorado?

He could vividly remember the smiles, the laughs at his father's horrible jokes.

What happened to the family that would never miss a meal at the dinner table every night?

Did they even care that they missed his last baseball game?

Sure he hadn't done his best this season. Well, to be honest, he kind of stunk.

But it finally was his game. He made that home run, he took their team to state.

It was the first time Austin felt really proud of himself.

But they weren't there. His brother, of course, wouldn't miss a single game, as he was standing right there in the bleachers.

But it still would have been nice to see his parents cheering him on.

They were both with their "secret" companions that day.

"You did great buddy." He did believe his brother, but he didn't want to hear any compliments at that moment.  He would have really cared for a compliment from his dad.

If he was good enough, why wasn't it good enough for his parents to come?

"Come on don't be too upset. Look there's Pete by the food stand. I'll get you a hot dog,"

His brother Mason and Pete were known as the duo. Best friends since Pete and his family moved into town five years ago.

But. . .

When Pete came, so did she.

"Hey guys." His brother's friend greeted them, of course having to drag her behind him against will.

"You did great out there man, congrats. Sorry, Mason, I had to bring Ally along. My parents said that I had to bring my little sister or they would ground me till graduation."

Oh, how Austin wished that Pete would have just left that annoying sister off his back in their home state. She was just so perfect at everything and he couldn't stand it.

The teacher's pet, the lead in the schools play, the girl voted as "class-president." Which he thought was stupid since they're only in the fifth grade.

Most of all he hated that Ally was here at his winning game, and not his parents.

Then again, at least she was here.

"Can we please leave," the little girl complained, "I'm bored."

Pete chuckled looking down at her, "You're only upset because although we were sitting behind the fence, you still managed to get hit with a ball."
