"Give me the key."
I turn around and he has his hand out. I clench my jaw but hand it over.
"This was your last summer here. Find yourself a different place next time. I don't want to see you again." He staggers back inside.
I hear a gate click open and Lorenzo comes running out, engulfing me in his arms.
"Are you coming back?"
It breaks my heart to see him so down. No kid should have to go through stuff like this.
"He can't know if I see you. So we have to meet up outside the house. Okay? But I promise to see you. At least once a week. I promise." I wrap my arms around him and ruffle his hair.
A couple moments later, he lets go and without looking back, he runs inside.
I rub my face, trying to smooth out my life as if it would help. Starting my truck, I head towards school but halfway there, I break down. I can't keep myself together and tears fill my eyes to where everything is blurry.
I pull over and rest my head on the steering wheel, taking deep breaths.
I'm okay. We're okay. It's okay. Repeat.
You got through a whole summer and you're free. Live a little.
And breathe idiot.
