Metal Sonic: Menace or Mislabeled?

A Second Chance

I woke up and immediately knew something was wrong. For starters, I woke up. I've never woken up because I'm a machine. Machines don't sleep. Also, I felt completely sore and had a massive headache. Sure, I'd taken plenty of damage before, but I'd never been sore, and I've certainly never had a headache. Something strange is going on here. As I got up, I realized that I was in a hospital. I immediately fell to my knees as a tidal wave of, I guess, memories washed over me.

Almost three years ago, a light blue hedgehog was talking with his girlfriend, a white hedgehog, about their future together. The two had been together for a while and now, with twins on the way, things were looking brighter for the young couple. "I'm excited Maya, don't get me wrong, but I'm just worried I'll be even worse than my parents," the blue hedgehog told his love.

Maya was rather surprised to hear her partner mention his parents. While she knew that his relationship with them was rough, she didn't know the full story. If she had, she would have known that his relationship with his parents was not, in fact, rough, but nonexistent. When he was born, something changed in them. They treated him horribly until his grandmother found out and reported them to the authorities. He would live with his grandma who, for all intensive purposes, was the loving guardian the boy desperately needed all the way up to her passing the year before. However, his time with his parents left the kind of scars that don't heal easily, and it caused him to have a very difficult time trusting people. The two he trusted most were his grandmother and girlfriend.

"Micheal, I know you and your parents didn't have the best of relationships, but the only way you'll be anything like them is if you choose to be," Maya told the father of her children. This made him smile, which always warmed her heart on even the darkest days. They hugged each other tightly as they prepared to start the next chapter of their lives.

Unfortunately, disaster would strike. While out shopping for things they would need for their twins, the young couple were run off the road by a drunk driver. Micheal would awaken in the hospital to learn that he was the only survivor. For the next few weeks, he felt empty, before meeting a man, a tall human with a crazy mustache, who claimed he could give the hedgehog purpose. Micheal, with nothing else to lose agreed. The next thing he knew he was placed inside what looked like a suit of armor as everything went black.

Michael's Pov

I sat there and tried to process everything that just happened I was so lost in thought that I didn't even notice that someone had entered until I heard a voice talking to me. I looked up and saw that it was Sonic. He asked me how I was doing and I honestly wasn't sure how to answer him. "I-I remember everything from before I was Metal. The last thing I remember was helping Amy give birth, but I can't remember what happened after that, nor why I'm here and am me again," I told him.

"I can explain that, but first come with me. I promised I would bring you to a couple of people once you woke up," he said. He helped me up and told me to follow him. I did as I was told and we soon reached another room. Inside was Amy holding her baby, which she named Amethyst, in her arms. Sonic sat down next to her and I took a seat across from them. 

"Hey Metal," she said once she saw me. "I'm glad to see you're awake. How are you feeling?"

I took a deep breath and told them what I remembered. "I remembered my life before I was Metal. My name was-is Micheal. I-I had a girlfriend named Maya. We were expecting twins, but then she died in a car accident. A few weeks later, I joined Eggman and he incased me inside that machine. The last thing I remember from what just happened is helping you give birth, Amy. How am I me again?" I asked them.

I could tell they were shocked by what I had told them. Amy explained that after I helped her deliver her daughter, I decided to help them escape. I gave her over to Sonic and even fought Eggman in my Neo Metal form. Not long after they left, I came out and collapsed. They brought me here and the doctors spent hours getting me out of Metal and stitching me up. I was pretty surprised by this and had a question I needed answered.

"Why?" I asked. "You could have left me there to die; a fitting punishment for everything I've done. Instead, you helped me, you saved me. After everything I've done to you two, why would you save me?"

"Micheal, it's clear to us that what you did as Metal before you helped me wasn't you," Amy explained. "Sure you did a lot of bad, but you did a lot of good too. You beat Eggman. You saved me and little Amethyst and we could never repay you for that. You deserve a second chance at life and we want to help you and be there for you, if you'll let us."

I thought about what she said. She's right, I've been given another shot, and it's up to me to make the most of it. I thanked them for saving me and told them that if I needed anything I would let them know. Then, they made me a couple of offers that surprised me; the first was letting me join their team of good guys, which I ended up accepting. The second was letting me stay at their house until I found a place of my own, which I gratefully accepted. The final one was the one that shocked me the most, as they asked me if I wanted to be Amethyst's uncle, seeing as I saved her and she had grown attached to me.

Once I finally snapped out of the shock, I agreed and they let me hold her. As I looked at the little hedgehog in my arms, I couldn't help but think about Maya and how things could have been. But, I know I can't dwell on the past forever. I've been given a second chance, I'm going to make  it count.
