"Evie, please!"
"I don't have the strength," she said, sounding furious, yet as calm as she tried to be.
She shoved her tray into the cleaning bin, before walking past me. I groaned, shoving mine in as well, before walking after her.
"Evie, please. You don't understand."
"Oh, I do," she bit.
She walked out of the cafeteria, and through people making their to dessert. I just kept walking after her.
"Evie, please just listen-"
"I don't want to," she but, making me groan again.
I grabbed her by her arm, pulling her to the side off the quad, off of the grass. I spun her to meet my eyes, and I saw the clear unhappiness in them.
"She's not a fan of telepaths."
"Oh, so you tell her I'm a normie?!" She bit loudly, making me sigh.
"That's not what I said, Evie. Please just let me-"
"I don't want to listen to you tell me some excuse. I'm a telepath, and if you have something against that, and your... your... I don't even know what we are. If... if you can have peace with my ability, so much that your mom is allowed to know... Then I don't want to speak to you, okay?"
She turned around, walking off, but this time I didn't follow her. I watched her walk away, before sitting down beside her aunt. Ryle did look up at me, and I know he knows what happened.
Groaning, I turned around, just to see Xavier standing with a bowl of ice cream in his hand. I sighed, rolling my eyes.
"She seems mad."
"She is."
"Why?"
"I told my mom that Evie's ability was yet to be discovered."
I saw how his eyes widened he thought I was mentally stupid, and at the moment I must've been.
I groaned. "Dude, I get it. But she doesn't understand."
"I don't understand," Xavier stated, stepping closer to me. "Man, you just put yourself in the dog box for no reason!"
"My mom doesn't like telepaths," I said, making Xavier shrug.
"So what?"
"What?" I frowned. "I'd be digging myself a hole if I said she was one."
Xavier's facial expression didn't change. "You already did by saying she wasn't one!"
I groaned, again. "Fuck, man. You don't get it-"
"You don't get it," Xavier bit, suddenly pointing at my chest. "You just showed her that you cannot love her the exact way she is. You made her think she wasn't good enough. Man, you just made her think her mother would never approve."
"But she-"
"So, what," he continued. "She doesn't like telepaths. She loves Evie, right? I saw the way they spoke!"
He was right. Not even knowing what she was, my mother still spoke to her more in one meal than she usually did to me in weeks.
"Dig yourself out that hole or get yourself a new girl- which I know you really don't want to do."
He walked away, leaving me standing in thought. He was completely right. My mother had no right to decide who I was allowed to date. I understand why she didn't like telepaths, but she still loved Evie.
