Author's note: At the start, there is talk of wanting to jump. Throughout the story, there will be talk about trauma and intense situations. Please enjoy but I ask that you read with caution :)
I stand out on the ledge of my balcony, seeing the people gathering below. I see them pulling their phones, seeing heroes gather, too, trying to come up with a plan to talk me down. I want to jump, but a part of me is scared. Tears run down my cheeks as my legs shake. At 16, with my wings a mangled mess, never allowed to fully grow back...and the marksmanship of a highly trained assassin...I've killed people against my will...and I can't take the guilt, not anymore, but I can't bring myself to jump.
"Hey, kid..." I jump, clinging to the side, seeing Hawks land on my balcony just behind me, "whatcha doin' there, hm?"
I look down, seeing police lights and even more onlookers, "I can't anymore...m-my quirk...I've killed people. My wings...they're damaged...I've been forced to kill...over and over and over and...and I can't let myself kill another person." I whimper.
I see him glance at the little protrusions under my layers of shirts, "Who would clip a baby bird's wings?" He asks, probably to himself. He pauses, "Have you thought of signing up for the hero course at UA?" He shrugs, "You'd be joining in the middle of the school year but I'm sure I can get you in on my recommendation...if it'd get you off that ledge."
Is this guy for real? "Did you not hear me? I've killed people. I was trained to kill people. A hero course isn't going to help."
"You'd be surprised, kid. A lot of different kids with a lot of different quirks go there. They also learn how to use their quirk for good. You can learn to use those learned skills for good." He puts a hand up before I can respond, "Before you say anything, I'm sure some of them have...questionable pasts." He sighs, giving me a small smile, "We'll get you signed up, get you a dorm room on campus so I know you're safe...I'll even pay for whatever you need." He holds a hand out to me, "C'mon kid, it's ok...you'll be fine from here on out."
I bite my lip as I shift, and as I attempt to get back over the railing, I slip and start to fall, screaming until I feel arms around me, "Easy there, clumsy baby bird." He chuckles as he holds me close, "I've got you." I shake in his arms as he lands, "You're safe..." I hear people start to cheer, hiding my face in his chest.
"Endeavor?" Hawks calls someone over, seeing the #1 hero, "She's safe, albeit a little shaken up."
"That's a relief. We'll get her admitted to a hospital for psychological-"
"Let me stop you right there, big guy..." He interrupts, hearing Endeavor growl in frustration, "She's got a quirk. She's got wings like me. Somebody clipped her wings though...poor thing."
"What are you suggesting, Hawks?" Something about Endeavor's tone makes me nervous as Hawks laughs a bit, probably in an attempt to ease the tension, "Well, I was thinking of enrolling her at UA, on my recommendation."
"Are you insane?! If her wings are damaged, she'd be safer in a hospital!" He yells, the flames on his face and suit getting bigger, making me whimper, "What would UA do with her?!"
"Chill, hot shot, you're not helping to ease her fear." He holds me closer, "They'd give her a safe place to heal...away from whoever damaged her wings. I'll talk to Eraserhead personally. He'll know what to do." He starts to fly, "Don't worry about it. I'll take charge of the little bird. You just go on with your duties as #1 'kay?" He starts to fly off as Endeavor yells after him, "I HOPE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, HAWKS!"
I hear Hawks chuckle, "I swear, sometimes I feel like he looks down on me." I keep my eyes closed to shield them from the wind, "Don't worry, kid...you're in good hands with me." I get lost in the beat of his wings, letting it calm my nerves, his scent hitting my nose, easing my nerves further, "You smell really nice..." I say softly, hearing a small laugh, "You like it, kid?"
