Jack laughed, dumbfounded.

Mistake not, he wasn't laughing at Valory, it was directed more at himself for realizing she was but a person, with many a layer, of course, but a person nonetheless.

The tall, badass, even scary-looking, painstakingly inquisitive blonde was not that different from him. Although her appearance was so sharp and striking that she could easily be taken for a merciless villain, she too was made of flesh and bones, just like him. With fears and a beating heart. Said heart, which he could feel pounding terrified as she clawed her nails into his neck.

Blinded by the gaze of his fascination with her being a real live human, it had been easy for him to put her on a pedestal and study her, dissonating from the thoughts that humans may be equal to his kin. Sure, it didn't aid a different view, the very fact that the human he had the most interactions with thus far had been Valory. Her face was constantly cold and emotionless as if her shell was empty, soulless. Although the words spoken out of her mouth were mostly friendly or bluntly detached, her resting bitch face could tear a man in two.

- Does the height scare you? – Jack asked going higher to test her.

Humans were unfamiliar territory for him, so just the breakthrough wasn't enough for him to totally humanize her. She could very well be trying to bleed him and failing. There were many stories about humans being dangerous, heartless, and evil-driven... For all he knew, she could be a psycho with perfect posture at all times.

Seriously, the posture thing was uncanny as hell.

People are not perfect. Not that perfect.

- It's not the height that scares me, IT'S THE FALLING! – she responded gripping harder on him.

- Don't worry, even if you do, I shall catch you. – he said keeping on going higher.

- I ALREADY BELIEVE YOU! NO POINT IN PROVING IT! – Valory shouted.

- Very well, to the ground, then. –

Jack replied quite cynical, intending on being very literal about it.

He deliberately closed his wings, and they went on a free fall.

- WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?! -

- Isn't this what you wanted? To go back down? -

- IF I DIE, I SWEAR,

I'M DRAGGING YOU TO HELL WITH ME, JACK! -

Panic-stricken, Valory's heart was racing. Beating, pounding, pummeling inside her chest. Her blood ran ice cold turning her skin a ghastly shade of grey. Yes, she was afraid of heights -and of dying, in general-, but it wasn't solely that. As she closed her eyes and braced herself for the impact, she knew there was something else at play.

All that fear she felt and the terror feeding off her soul,

were not hers.

Naturally, the shapeshifter never meant for them to hit the water. Seconds before it could happen, he opened his wings, and they were supposed to glide over the lake and into the forest.
