The woods were Maisie's safe place. A place where she can be however she wanted and get away from anyone she wanted. Today she was getting away from the high expectations of her mother and the world.
Today would be her last day here. She'll be gone and she would not have to deal with the pressure on her shoulders and the suffocating air everywhere she walked. Maisie's eyes were red and puffy leftover tears streaked down her face.
She snaked her arms around her waist trying to keep herself warm in the November cold weather. The rainfall that night still lingered with the dew on the plants and trees. Her neck was chilled by the wind as it brushed her high ponytail.
Her teeth shattered but yet she still ventured on to the spot where she would finally rest her secrets. The spot was a small ravine with high rushing water. It was called the ravine of death at least that's what Maisie thinks the other kids in her school call it. It's a place where no one can hear you scream due to the rushing water and a place where you can have quiet time..not many people came to this area thanks to the high weeds and tics that come out at night.
If you tried to jump it you would fall and drown in the waters. A boy in her class named Charlie Dumphy said he did it two summers ago but everyone knew he was lying. I mean if you look at Charlie you'll understand he's what you would call an unathletic comic book nerd.
Not that it mattered it was just if bruce Yamada -the most athletic kid in Hawkins middle school- couldn't make it then there was no way Charlie could.
Finally, she would be free of everything taking her family secrets with her. Just one more step and it would all be over. Taking a deep breath Maisie took off her favorite sneakers -the one she and her little sister had embroidered together- and placed them to the side next to a couple of rocks along with her pretty pearl hair pins she got from her grandma.
Maisie closed her eyes as her face was being basked in the sun's rays her freckles glowing a warm welcome as it was flowing through her body.
The only sounds she could hear were the birds singing in the early morning, the water hitting the rocks and the sounds of laughter of kids nearby. Memories flashed through her head like a movie as she made a step with her bare feet.
One last move was made to her hair where she took out her high ponytails and let the stands of the brown flow down her back and swayed again in the wind. The steps became more rigged and heavy almost like her body was saying no to being so close to her death.
Yet her mind told her to keep going to only stop when she felt water reach her head. She was so close to it that feeling the rough edge gave her enough boast to know she was close and excitement bubbled inside her stomach.
Here it goes.
"What are you doing?"
Snapping her eyes open Maisie regained her footing before she almost slipped turning around she saw three boys standing behind her confused why she was so close to the ravine of death.
