Living with the McCalls was great. They were kind and comforting and accommodating. It felt like family to Isaac, something he hadn't felt since his own mother had passed. With just the three of them, Isaac was content.
When Rafael showed up, Isaac wasn't too worried. Sure, he couldn't have been great if he left his family but Isaac couldn't notice any immediate aggression from him, maybe he had changed.
But then he saw him interact with Stiles and Isaac realised Rafael McCall was not a friend.
Scott didn't seem to understand Stiles' level of hatred for his dad and that made Isaac confused. He knew Scott was against violence but he acted like he didn't know what his father had done wrong. It was a typical abuse victim strategy and Isaac didn't like that one bit. But then it crossed Isaac's mind that maybe what had happened had been so bad that Scott had blocked it from his memory completely and genuinely forgotten, another abuse victim strategy.
Isaac had to corner Stiles then and demand to know what he knew about Rafael. What made him so full of rage. Stiles had told him then, the whole story (or what he had overheard). He made him promise not to tell Scott. The request made Isaac's blood boil and he was glad it was only the two of them at Stilinski's house for the hell he raised about Scott deserving to know.
He planned to tell him. He did. But then Melissa asked to speak to him right after Scott left for work at the vets. She made him promise too and he couldn't yell at her, not after everything she'd done for him and everything she'd been through. But he still wasn't happy about it.
Scott deserved to know. It pained Isaac to see Scott trying to forgive his dad, to rekindle their relationship, when he had no idea that the man had laid a hand on him, even if accidental.
Melissa and Stiles didn't like him, that was obvious, but Isaac HATED him. He started staying in Scott's bedroom more often (which maybe wasn't a massive change). He felt a strong urge to protect the boy, to not let his father hurt him again. He couldn't fight his own father but he didn't care about Scott's. One wrong move and Isaac would insure his death.
He found himself growling at the door whenever he heard Rafael hover outside before leaving for the night. He'd hold Scott's sleeping form closer, almost shielding him from the doorway. He didn't know if Rafael could hear it. The man never said anything about it so neither did he.
Scott had noticed pretty quickly that Isaac wasn't keen on his dad, noticed the glares he shot him every day, the tension in his shoulders when he was around. Scott, sweet loving caring Scott, jumped to the wrong conclusion that Isaac was weary because of his own father. Isaac couldn't think of a way to prove him wrong without breaking the promise he had made to Melissa (he didn't really care about Stiles').
Then that faithful day came. Isaac had been there and had made sure to be silent so neither man would notice him. He listened to Rafael's recount of what had happened. Isaac was disgusted. "You did this", "you did that". Isaac had the urge to run down and shake the man, to tell him that "HE did this" and "HE did that". But he didn't. He stayed silent. He listened as Scott shouldered the blame without even realising he was being blamed. As much as Isaac liked Derek and Argent, he despised how used to being manipulated Scott had become.
Rafael seemed to think he was in the clear then. That the truth had set him free or something. He had knocked on Scott's bedroom door but Issac couldn't growl because Scott was awake this time. He watched as the boy opened the door to his fathers apologetic face. It took everything in him not to run up and grab Scott away from the danger. He watched in triumph as Scott slammed the door in his face.
He had held him then, whispering softly about how none of it had been his fault. Scott just laughed it off with a shrug, telling that he knew that but Isaac didn't think he did. He tried again, this time retelling the story the right way, telling Scott that his dad was the one who grabbed and pushed. Scott had gone quiet then and Isaac thought he had finally gotten through to him. But then Scott had smiled up at him, closed mouth and honest, and told him that his dad had changed and everything was alright.
Isaac didn't believe it as easily. But he swore to make sure that everything would be okay, that Scott would be okay. He swore to protect him from monsters, no matter what form they came in.
