Vernita Fallows did not live the most glamorous life imaginable. She worked from 9 to 5 from the mere age of thirteen years old. She had dropped out of school due to her family not being able to support her, so they put her up for adoption when she was fourteen, and she bounced in between families within the foster care system. Some families were nice and hospitable, but there were also some who were not.

But, Vernita refused to give up her freedom so easily—one fateful July night, she escaped from her abusive foster parents, Michael and Emily, and never looked back. She somehow managed to hitchhike all the way across the country to Oklahoma, with only $60 in her pocket.

She's relieved to finally be free, away from the abusive she endured back 'home' in Montana, but never in a million years, Vernita wold guess what—or more rather, who—Tulsa, Oklahoma had in store for the young teenage girl.

Especially in the form of a stark blonde haired boy named Ponyboy Curtis.
