Everyone has a secret side to themself. A side they don't show to anyone—not to friends, not to lovers, not even to family.
They hide who they are and what they want behind lies and painted smiles.
And thus the world...
maintains it's thin veneer of peace.~•✩°※°✩•~
I woke up with a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach, and a splitting headache. This has only ever happened to me twice. Once when I was little, the day my parents died, and the second time the day I was taken by an organization to be experimented on and given telepathic powers. Today's didn't feel as drastic as those other times, but you never do know what's going to happen. I've long since learned that in my line of work.
I got out of bed, still holding Chimera, which had been a gift from my parents. It had actually been a gift for my fourth birthday, the same day my parents died. I knew where they hid the gifts even though I wasn't supposed to, although I guess it didn't really matter, since they never came home to scold me anyway. One would think that Chimera would give me bad memories and make me sad, but for some reason he just makes me feel closer to them.
I stepped over my close canine companion, Bond, and headed to the bathroom to change and freshen up. Bond had also been a gift from my parents, but he was adopted when I turned 3. They'd tried to say his name was because of the bond our family had, but it was mostly because I was obsessed with a spy cartoon on TV.
My mom and dad had also been spies, some of the best actually, and they were the ones who'd given me my codename: Starfall. Mom had said it was because I could reach up to the sky and bring down the stars, but I know that's not really practical, and even if I tried, I'd get in trouble with the budget. In any case, I still like the name.
I'd been training to become a spy since I could walk, and now I'm an expert in martial arts, reading people, and various assassination techniques. I haven't actually killed anyone, but I've been exposed to quite a few corpses, and I've incapacitated a few. But it's only a matter of time before I'm backed into a corner with no choice but to take someone out. In the spy business, it's kill or be killed.
I exited the bathroom and sat down on my bed. Lately, I've been thinking about the extent of my telepathic powers. "I'm going to try and transmit to you. Tell me how well you hear it." I said, looking over at Bond. He tilted his head and nodded. 'Okay.' While Bond may look like a giant teddy bear, he's really smart and can attack if needed.
Not to mention, I've got some weird telepathic connection with him, mostly likely due to his own precognitive powers, which means we can speak to and understand each other perfectly. We can communicate from anywhere, since I've never had a problem with range with him. It's too bad I can't transmit to other people as easily as I can to him.
I closed my eyes and concentrated hard. I figured that my telepathy created a gateway between my mind and other people's. All I have to do is push my thoughts through that gate. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. It's a lot easier said than done. Bond's silence wasn't very reassuring. "Anya."
My eyes snapped open and I went on high alert. I already knew who it was, but it's kinda just a natural response for me. I looked up to see my guardian and mentor, Agent Dusk. He was tall and had sandy brown hair, with a sharp face. "What are you..?" he asked, but I interrupted. "Nothing." I said innocently. Of course, being together so long, he could see through my lies. And he knows that I know he can, but he didn't press anyway. Which for the record, I'm very grateful for.
No one knows about my strange powers except the person who saved me from that horrid facility, and he's dead, so beside Bond, there's no one else who knows. And I'm planning to keep it that way. We don't need any more wars starting up over research that genetically engineers people and animals to have psychic powers.
"Headquarters wants you. They've got a special mission for you, top priority. You'll be gone for a while, so you should pack all the essentials." My attention snapped back to Dusk, and I nodded.
A small bag should do. He left me to pack, and I got to work. I don't have a lot of stuff that, when it comes down to it, that I really need with me. I grab a few pairs of clothes, Chimera, and a toothbrush. Aside from that, I don't actually need anything. You may be thinking that bringing a stuffed animal for sentimental reasons is just dead weight and not very practical, but there's actually a transmitter, small recording device, and a receiver inside it. Plus, the inside has a pocket with some small useful gadgets, like tiny tranquilizers, and little portable listening devices. Chimera is my main communication line when I'm undercover. No one suspects a little girl with a stuffed animal, right?
'Have fun.' Bond transmitted as I left the room. 'Easy for you to say.' I replied telepathically, sticking out my tongue. "Good luck." Dusk said as I came downstairs. "Thanks. See you soon." I smiled and left, heading for headquarters.
Top priority, huh? This should be interesting.
