Simon and the other kids his age were grouped with slightly older kids to teach them how to use the equipment, Simon was grouped with a tall grime-covered, tattered-clothed boy. With matted hair, smudged cheeks, and a perpetual scowl sitting patiently in the corner of the room with his hands behind his back,
Simon was put into a cell with him for the time being, but as soon as the guards left the boy woke up and revealed a piece of wire he was holding in his hands,
"Get up," the boy hissed. "We're escaping."
Simon sat up, confused "What are you talking about?" he asked,
"I'm David," the boy said, holding out his hand. "And I've been planning our escape for months. We're going to hide in the clothing shipments and sneak out when they're loaded onto the truck. Since your my cellmate, your gonna help me get out of here"
Simon's eyes widened in alarm. "But won't they catch us?" he asked, his voice trembling.
David shook his head. "They never check the shipments," he said confidently. "We'll be out of here before they even know we're gone."
Simon wasn't so sure, but he didn't want to disappoint David. He nodded, following the older boy as he used the wire to open the cell and follow what seemed to be a map inscribed on his arm, they both crept through the dark sweatshop, trying to avoid the guards.
David managed to sneak into the laundry room, while Simon stood there behind the wall waiting for David to give the all clear. But just as they were about to make their move, a guard spotted David and grabbed him, hauling him off to solitary confinement.
Simon watched in horror as David was brutalized by the guards, tears streaming down his face as he realized the plan had failed.
