Today was the day of the hot air balloon festival. Kai slowly opened his eyes after a good night's sleep, Kai almost didn't want to get up, but he couldn't stand the constant alarm beeps. Kai swiveled his body off the bed, and switched off the alarm clock. Kai began some morning stretches as the position he had slept in that night made him feel consequentially sore, his joints letting out loud crispy cracks that strangely satisfied Kai. Kai had also requested the day off at the grocery, and due to his sublime performance at work, they allowed him a day off to have a date with buck. Kai heard a knock at the door, and opened it to see Buck patiently standing there. "Hey, Kai. I brought you some breakfast from the local diner. Hope you like waffles!" Buck handed Kai a styrofoam box, Kai eagerly opened the box, containing chocolate spread waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. Kai looked up back at buck and gave a soft smile, as if telepathically saying how grateful he was. "May I come inside?" Buck asked, "Sure, come in!" Kai invited. Kai sat down at the table and began to dig into his meal. Kai loved to have sweet foods for breakfast, and these were the best waffles Kai had had in a while. As Kai reached for another fork full, he looked back at Buck and asked "This is delicious, care for a bite?" Buck declined, saying "I ate some eggs and bacon earlier, I'm good." As Kai finished off the waffles, and wiped the whipped cream off his snout. "Thanks for the breakfast, Buck" Kai spoke, "You really didn't have too." Buck began to blush and tilt his head away, seeing Kai with such admiration of his actions. "So you got the whole day off, right?" Buck asked. Kai nodded with great confidence, "Sure did, I'm just so antsy for the festival!" Buck let out a sigh and a giggle, he was happy to see how much energy had, as if he had fully regained confidence in himself after cutting off Dolion for good. "So, other than the hot air balloon festival, what do you want to do with your day off?" Asked Buck. Kai thought for a moment, the possibilities felt somewhat daunting to him, it was 8 in the morning, and the event started at 6pm, and then Kai had an epiphany. "What if we had a picnic in the National Park?" Buck perked up with interest, "I'm listening." Kai continued, "I did some research and found that the hot air balloon festival is taking place near the National Park, maybe we could spend the day in the area, and maybe go on a hike or two before we go to the festival." Buck was absolutely hooked on the idea, and lunged into Kai for a hug. "That sounds amazing babe!!!" As Buck squeezed Kai tightly, Kai felt flustered and in shock, his eyes widened and Kai froze in shock, the hug felt so out of the blue, but at the same time he felt comforted and happy. As Buck let go of Kai, he saw the shocked look on Kai's face and softly giggled. "Earth to Kai, you there?" Buck playfully spoke, as Kai stared frozen in a flustered shock. As Kai snapped back to reality, Kai began to plan the day with Buck. "How's about I can drive you over to the World's Deli, and we can get some food for the people picnic?" Buck suggested. "I'm down for that." Kai replied. And the two of them began to walk to Buck's car. As Buck and Kai arrived at the deli. As the two of them walked inside the smell of many foods from around the world filled their nostrils. "Let's pick our own meals and meet up back at the car, ok?" Kai spoke, "Sounds good" responded Buck. Kai began to wonder about. As Kai weaved throughout the crowd, he felt somewhat overwhelmed, parents chatting on hot gossip, kids crying over not getting "that" lollipop when the two are identical. Kai had never heard of many of the dishes, but was too nervous to try anything new. And in a hurry Kai grabbed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, paid, and walked into the parking lot. Kai leaned against the hood, he felt absolutely overwhelmed and exhausted. As Kai opened his phone he saw a text from Buck, "omw to the car :)" and then Kai walked out the door, his paws carrying two large bags of exotic snacks from the checkout lanes. "So, shall we get a move on?" Buck smugly asked, reaching for his keys. Kai climbed into the shotgun seat, and shut the door behind him. Buck started up the ignition and the two of them were off. "If you'd like you could try some of the candy I got." Buck offered. "I'm fine, eating in a bumpy car makes me nauseous." Kai declined politely. The two of them drove on and on for what seemed like an eternity. Leaving behind the smoggy cities and oil rigs, to a more remote and relaxed area. The car ride was rather quiet, maybe Buck remembered that one off comment about him easily getting motion sick. The soft ambience of the dirt road crunching beneath the rubber tires of the car put Kai at ease and Kai couldn't help but to slowly doze off, his eyes slowly opening and closing before succumbing to sleep. The map felt so long, yet so short, because before Kai knew it, he felt the car slowly park, followed by the seatbelt alarm beeping three times. Kai fumbled awake, and looked out the window. The area seemed to be a lightly populated picnic area outlooking the hot air balloons. Kai climbed out the car, shutting the door behind him, and Buck opened the trunk to grab a monochrome checkerboard picnic blanket. Kai saw a perfect spot overlooking the hot air balloons, and gestured over to buck to bring over the setup for the date.
