Agent Derek Morgan had forced his boss into giving the team a day off after what they went through the day prior.
His boss was more than willing to give the team a day off to try and process the events of infiltrating a cult and to Morgan, that was the least he could do.
With his free time, Derek found himself sleeping in, going to the gym for a few hours and then taking a short car ride to a red brick, ivy-coated building in a vibrant area of DC. The plan was to meet his partner, who was more like a little brother to him. Although, he unexpectedly had been receiving texts from him all day long, pushing back their meeting time. When he pulled up and parked, choosing to take a space further from the door, he noticed the reason as to why Spencer had been pushing the time back.
Which unexpectedly came in the form of a girl.
He couldn't help but let a smirk escape his lips when seeing how happy Spencer was simply looking at her. He pulled out his phone and dialled a friend.
"If you tell me we have a case I will blow your brains out," The woman threatened and it made Derek laugh.
"Relax Emily, I am outside Spencer's apartment and he's with a girl," Morgan explained and he heard his friend plop down on a sofa, eager to listen.
"Is it a girl or the girl?" She asked him. Morgan watched them go into the building, Spencer holding the door for her and following her inside.
"From the looks of things, it's the girl. She's late 20s to early 30s, smaller than him, blonde hair and I can't get a visual on her face," Morgan explained, getting closer to the building.
"Any identifying markers, like tattoos?" Emily asked, acting as if she was on the clock.
"Nothing like that. Are we seriously here profiling her, how sad can we be?" Morgan laughed. He presumed by now, that they had left the lobby and were headed up the stairs so, he headed inside.
"Does she have serial killer eyes?" Emily asked, munching on something through the phone, "We have to keep the kid away from crazies."
"Prentiss, are you eating popcorn?" He asked her.
"I'm bored okay, I don't know what to do with myself. Plus, popcorn with like, tons of butter, is super good," She explained, and he laughed.
"Alright then, you do you. I'm going inside now. I'm picking Spencer up to go grab some food, get ready and I'll swing by and get you," He hung up the phone for her, sliding it into his back pocket before entering the building.
It is times like these, he thought, that swat training and exception covert operational skills came in handy. Not when chasing bad guys, but when spying on your friends and their potential partners. He knew to take the stairs, using the four flights as a mini workout, even though he had been at the gym that morning.
Once he reached the top floor, he peaked his head through the door. He still had not seen the girl's face and when he got closer to try to look at them, he realized Spencer's height did an exceptional job at shielding her. He rolled his eyes, knowing that. he was probably not going to be able to see her today and get an idea of who she was. For a moment, he contemplated announcing himself to them, meeting her and potentially embarrassing Spencer in the process but, he waited.
"I'll see you Friday,"
He watched the door to her apartment shut and the smile boomed out of Spencer's face. Derek felt proud of his friend but more importantly, due to his ego, he felt proud of himself for pushing Spencer to act on this. Claiming complete responsibility for the situation. The second his friend closed the door to his apartment behind him, Derek leapt up the rest of the steps and began aggressively knocking on the door.
"My man!" His smile was bursting off his face as he pulled Spencer in for a hug and ignored his germ phobia completely.
"Why are so happy?" He asked, feeling completely suffocated by the biceps of his friend.
"You have a date!" He yelled and Spencer shushed him, pushing Morgan into his apartment and closing the door behind him.
"Were you listening to my conversation?" He accused him, Derek seemed not to care at all and plonked himself down on the sofa. "Morgan!"
"I was not intentionally listening. I took the stairs and heard you have plans for Friday, that's all, player," He laughed, and Spencer couldn't help but smile. "Grab your jacket, I'm taking you and Prentiss out for some food."
"Did you call Emily about this?" He asked with a straight face and Morgan nodded with a guilty face. "Of course you did."
Spencer excused himself to freshen up while Derek sat alone and unoccupied in his apartment. Spencer's place was filled with books, and bookshelves that were overflowing and took up both walls of his living room. His green velvet couch tied the room together, bringing calm to the case the literature provided. Derek snooped his shelves, playing a game with himself to see if he knew of a single book on the shelf but soon remembered that he in fact did not speak Russian.
He checked his watch, looking to see how long he'd been there and noticed it was exactly four o'clock. That's when a second notice came to mind in the form of a loud sound.
"Cause your hot n your cold, your yes then your no-"
He was slightly confused at the music blaring through the walls, figuring out that it was a neighbour pretty quickly.
"Reid, can you hear that?" He asked a few minutes later when Spencer returned to the room.
"What time is it?" He asked instead of responding to the question.
"4:03 pm exactly, did you not just hear Katy Perry?" Morgan began to question whether or not he was going insane.
"D2 starts baking right about now. Ms Lunde next door does mind, it helps her nap and it's about five am in Japan so the other guy on this floor is preparing for that market to open," Spencer rambled as he tidied off a few papers and grabbed a jacket.
"And what do you think of it?" Morgan probed him.
"I'm not here most of the time, it's weird right now that we don't have a case during the midweek. It's nice to know she's in there, doing her own thing," He explained, taking a maroon-coloured scarf off the back of the door and wrapping it around himself.
"I see," Morgan smirked, opening the door, "We will have 'the talk' at dinner, just to make sure you're practising safe sex!"
"I hate you," Spencer replied, following the laughing man out the door.
