Off to Nevermore

I knew from the moment I had my vision I was destined to leave the soul-crushing arena that was my high school. I couldn't help but smile as I saw the images of my dear cousin Wednesday throwing two large bags of pirahannas into a school swimming pool. It was only a few days after seeing the vision I received the call from Aunty Morticia and Uncle Gomez.

"Zoe, pack your bags. You are accompanying Wednesday to Nevermore Academy. " Aunty told me in the crystal ball. She was practically my mother at this point, and there was no arguing about this. Not that I wanted to, I had started packing the moment I saw the blood in the pool.

This was the moment I had been waiting for since the last time the Aunty and Uncle handed me back over to my mother. A chance to escape my own personal hell and start raising someone else's. They didn't even care that I didn't ask what Wednesday did this time.

I had to fly to the Addams family home before we set course for Nevermore. The unfortunate perks of living across the country from the only place that had ever felt like home. I was already a bit disgruntled and tired before I entered Aunty and Uncle's hearse. However, the sickening romantic scene they were performing before mine, and Wednesday's eyes made me want to hurl.

Wednesday and I gave each other a kill me now look as her parents serenaded each other. The sound of crows hitting the windshield was a welcome distraction from them.

"Darling, how long do you intend on giving us the cold shoulder? "Aunty Morticia asked after she and Gomez shared a kiss.

"Lurch, please remind my parents that I'm no longer speaking to them." I rolled my eyes at Wednesday's statement. It had been a few months since I last saw her, but she has not changed. It's not like she needed to; Wednesday and I got along just fine. I just hated how she treated her parents, especially coming from someone that has shitty ones.

"I promise you, my little viper. you will love Nevermore. " Uncle Gomez assured her. "Won't she, Tish."

"Of Course. It's the perfect school for her." Morticia faced her adoring husband as she spoke.

"Why? Because it was the perfect school for you?" Wednesday stared straight at her parents with the usual blank, unblinking stare. " I have no interest in following in your footsteps. Becoming Captain of the fencing team, Queen of the Dark Prom, President of the Seance Society."

"I merely meant that, finally you will be among peers who understand you. Maybe you and Zoe will even make some friends." Oh shit, I've been brought into the conversation. Maybe I should say something?

"I don't really think making friends will be all that easy for us." I still couldn't shake the incident at my last school. I was hoping that Nevermore would be different, but it was very slim.

"Nevermore is like no other boarding school. It's a magical place." Gomez stared longingly at Aunty Morticia. "It's where I met your mother and we fell in love."

"Oh lord, get me out of this car. " I muttered silently to myself as they inched closer to each other's lips.

"You guys are making us nauseous. Not in a good way." I just started looking out the window, ignoring the last tidbits of conversation. Something about murder charges and permanent records. I don't know. I just looked at the sky as the clouds started to form and cover the sun.

Soon enough, we entered the large black gates that read Nevermore Academy. The rain clouds started to darken, and water poured from the sky. I heard Aunty say something about how it was beautiful out. I couldn't agree more. I've always loved the smell of rain.

Lurch parked the car, and the lot of us made our way to Headmaster's office. Pugsley, Lurch, and I were asked to wait outside. Pugs leg bobbled nervously up and down as we waited.

"What?" I muttered. Most of the time when you talked to him it would calm him down enough.

"What's going to happen when Wednesday leaves me? The bullies will come back and just beat me up harder."

"Learn to fight. Uncle Fester has had Wednesday and I sparing each other since we were in diapers. "

"I don't like fighting. What if I hurt someone?" I pulled Pugsley in close by the collar of his shirt.

"Hurt them before they hurt you. Never give the chance to think you are weak and gullible." I released him. "Don't trust any of those normie assholes. They are and never will be your friends as long as your last name is Addams."

His leg stopped bobbling. We continued to wait in silence for a few more moments. I was called into the headmaster's office as Wednesday exited in a huff. I walked into the office where Aunty and Uncle were still seated. The headmaster was one of the tallest ladies I have ever seen in my life. Her short blond hair and make-up looked professional but not at the cost of her feminine side.

"Zoe, Please take a seat between your Aunt and Uncle." She gestured to the chair. I guessed Wednesday was in before. "I'm Headmaster Weems."

"Nice to meet you. " I said as I took my seat.

"Now Zoe, your records are exemplary just as your cousins. Perfect grades, prize soloist in the choir. You have everything that we look for at Nevermore, but may I ask why you are leaving your old school?" I kept my face straight, trying not to give anything about my time at the other school away.

"I feel that Nevermore can provide me with a better education. "

"And we asked her to, and we thought it would be beneficial for both Wednesday and Zoe to attend together," Morticia spoke up, giving me a wink. She knew what I had been going through at my last school. I was surprised that none of it was in my file for the headmaster to read. Maybe this was just a test to see if I was honest.

"Well, I have put you in Ophelia Hall same as Wednesday. However, you will not be roommates. We had a room with a roommate and a single room. Your cousin's parents thought it would be best not to put Wednesday in the single room for fear she might drive herself mad."

"Understandable," I replied in a monotone voice.

"I think you'll love Ophelia Hall Zoe! It used to be my old dorm, and it's beautiful!" Aunty Morticia exclaimed. I looked to my other side to see uncle Gomez daydreaming, probably about their times together in Ophelia Hall.

"Shall we go see your rooms?" Weems asked.
