Lock of Death

Chapter 3 😰

Alex POV

We walk away from the school with caution, heading towards the hardware store. The hardware store was 1.6 miles from the school so it was going to be a bit before we got there.

We got to the town where the store was at. We peaked around a corner to find multiple zombies shuffling slowly and bumping into each other. "How are we going to get to the store?" Violet whispered. "We can sneak around the back?" I suggested. Violet nodded and we quietly snuck towards the hardware store.

We enter the store and took whatever we needed and extra supplies. We were about to sneak back out when I a pile of wood I was carrying, bumped into a shelf with nails and screws. It crashed loudly on to the floor. Violet and I looked at each other terrified. A small group of 17 zombies from the middle of the town, came and banged on the glass to get to us. We pulled out our weapons just as the glass broke. The zombies shuffled towards us quickly just to get a taste of our flesh. Violet thrusted the knife into one of the zombie's head. I bashed another zombie's head in with my frying pan. We defended ourselves the best we could. Using anything we could find in the the store but the zombies kept getting closer. We killed about 8 zombies before we got backed into a corner. "I guess our plan failed." I said still swinging the frying pan in hopes to turn the tide of battle. "I guess, cya." Violet sobbed. I closed my eyes waiting for their teeth to tear into my flesh.

But instead I hear the sound of a gun being rapidly fired. I open my eyes just as one of the zombies collapse. A man pointing a gun right where a zombie was, stood in front of us. "Are you two alright?" "Now we are, thanks to you." Violet said smiling. But that moment ended when the guy got bitten by a zombie from behind. He screamed in pure agony. I bashed the zombie's brain in with my frying pan in horror. The guy falls to the floor as a dark thick crimson, liquid spread across the floor. We stand there in horror as we hear another horde of zombies coming. The gunshots must have alerted them. I grab the pile of wood I dropped and we find the back door and escape before the horde got to the store.

We ran like hell back to the school. Evaded other zombies, hid a couple of times, but we made it back. I drop the pile of wood and we get to work. After about 2 hours we finished boarding up all the first floor windows and secured the doors. We went back to the cafeteria and reflected on what happened back at the store. "I-I can't believe t-that happened." Violet stuttered, holding back tears. I let Jackie out of my bag and walked over and hug her as tears escaped from both our eyes. Jackie jumped on to Violets laps to try to comfort her. We stayed like that for a while till we decided to go organize the supply truck.

~Time Skip~

We hadn't realized that the sun was setting till the cafeteria got really dark. "Where should we sleep?" Violet asked. "Probably on the second floor because zombies can't climb." I stated. "Good thinking, we should see if we can find something to use as a blanket first though." I nodded at Violet's suggestion. We searched the whole school but only found hoodies in some backpacks that the students had left in a hurry. We also decided to use some of the backpacks as pillows. We head up to the science classroom on the second floor with Jackie hopping alongside us  and set up our makeshift bed. "We're going to have to get Jackie some food soon." I stated while petting Jackie. "Okay, but we need to be more careful so no one else gets bit." Violet pointed out while looking scared from what happened earlier. "Well good night Alex." "Good night Violet and good night Jackie." Jackie cuddled up close to me and drifted off to sleep within seconds. I laid down and stared out the window looking at the stars. I could hear Violet's soft snores and it helped me drift off in sleep.
