Unleashed,Chapter 2,
Home,
I walked a crossed the street from the park and entered the library. My home world.
"Hey Cat. How're you today? How was school?" Maddie, the librarian said smiling.
"Good, on both accounts. I just need to get a book for my homework." I said, already in the maze of bookshelves. In five minutes, I walked back to the counter with three books. One for homework.
"So, you'll be reading tonight?" She smiled scanning the first book. I nodded. "Good. Get your homework done though. I'll put these in a bag for ya." She said, pulling out a bag. I gave her my library card and she scanned it. "How's Mr. Kent?"
I smiled. "Same as yesterday. And the day before that and the day befor-"
"I get it. He's still gorgeous and single. Guess this is my shot then?" She winked, handing me the bag. I chuckled, knowing she wouldn't use it. Maddie was too shy.
"Bye, Maddie. See you later." I called behind me, grabbing my bag and leaving.
I walked to the park, and over to a tree the crew was laying under on a blanket they snagged out of my truck. "Got your book, nerd?" Marco asked biting into a piece of licorice.
I rolled my eyes, "Let's go." Margo stood up first and started collecting the stuff. Margo reminded me of a lighter skinned Jasmine; tall, gorgeous, pretty long dark hair. "We'll get the truck." I said, gesturing to Penelope.
We walked to the parking lot. It was twilight. The sun was gone, but it was still a little light. My phone quacked in my pocket telling me I had a text, scaring Pen.
"Shit! That scared me." She shouted. I chuckled, pulling out my cell. I opened it and my breath caught in my throat.
"Cat? What's up?" Pen said. I snapped out of my trance and realized I stopped walking. I turned the phone to her, letting her read it.
"From: Dad
Beer
6:47 p.m."
"Oh. Short and sour." Pen said, shrugging and handed it back.
I opened the driver side door and hopped in. I turned the ignition after I put the key in and Pen got in. I drove closer to the crew and waited for everyone to get in. Penelope sat in the middle again with Margo next to her and Marco in the back. I dropped everyone off at their houses and drove to the 'bad side' of town. It's really just where people who don't give a shit live, alcoholics and whores, stuff like that.
I pulled up behind the Arcade, turned off the truck, got out, and locked it. I walked to a door that had chains on it. I knocked loudly. A woman with red hair opened the door, she smiled.
"Hey, Zyra." I said, giving a small wave.
"Hey, kiddo." She said, pulling me in for a hug. "What's up, Hon?"
"Dad's out of booze. I need you to get it for me." I said as we walked back to my truck.
"Okay. C'mon, let's go." She said, her hand already on the handle. I smiled, unlocked the door, and got in. She hopped in and I drove to the gas station. I got twenty-five regular for gas and gave Zyra twenty dollars for the booze.
She got back in with a cheap bottle of whiskey. She handed me the cash back change, I shook my head. "Keep it."
Zyra shook her head, smiling. "No. I may be low class, but I'm not gonna take money from a teenage girl with an alcoholic dad and Barbie slut stepmom. I'm better than that."
I smiled gratefully, as she folded the money and stuffed it into my jackets pocket. I nodded, dropped her off at the corner, gave her five bucks, and drove home.
I sighed as I pulled into the small two story faded and stained white house. The lawn was a yellow green, the paint peeling, weeds and grass growing on the broken concrete driveway. Beer cans here and there. It was trashy but, it was home. Sadly.
I grabbed the stuff and went inside. I went into the kitchen, keeping my head down. I quickly put the whiskey in the freezer, and started dinner. I jumped as a beer bottle came flying into the kitchen, hitting the cabinet left of the oven, where it shattered. "Where's my fuckin' beer, goddamn it?!" Dad shouted from the living room.
I quickly grabbed two bottles, then decided it would be better for the cabinet if he had cans instead. He had plenty of beer in the fridge. I opened a can and handed it to him. I watched as he chugged it down. His skin was coated in dirt, his shirt wrinkled and sweaty, his brown hair greasy and messy. I swear he hadn't showered in a week and a half. He finished his beer and crimped it, throwing it on the floor with the others. I opened and handed him the next one.
After a while the noodles were done, so I added the sauce mix and stirred. I grabbed three bowls and dished them up. I grabbed dad's and grabbed two more cold beers, I set them in front of him, careful not to get in the way of the TV.
The front door slammed open as my stepmom stumbled into the house. Her shirt cut low, skirt super short, both wrinkled. She was drunk, again, from another night at the bar.
She's a bartender, and apparently closed the bar and had a private 'party'. Now that she was here too, it was time for me to disappear.
As she closed the door and stumbled to the couch, where she straddled his lap and shoved her tongue down his throat, I went into the kitchen and tried not to gag. I grabbed a soda and the other two bowls.
I walked into the living room, keeping my eyes low and being very quiet, I set one of the bowls next to dads and dashed upstairs, into my room.
I closed my door and closed my eyes, leaning back against it. "Could be worse, Cat." I reminded myself, sighing.
