FADE IN:
INT. MITSUBISHI PAJERO - DAY
The camera flies over a snowy Canadian landscape. The voice of ROLFE WHITEHOUSE
(Willem Dafoe) narrates.
ROLFE (V.O.)
"My brother's ghost has been haunting me ever since that day."
The camera slowly pans over a straight road running through a snowy forest.
"I've always tried to hide from the truth, to pretend that everything was alright,
even when it wasn't. I've told myself that I was just a victim of circumstance,
that I didn't have any control over the things that have happened. But the truth is,
I've been running from myself for as long as I can remember.
I've always known that there was something inside me that I was afraid of,
something dark and twisted that I couldn't escape. But I kept running,
kept pretending that everything was fine, hoping that it would all just go away.
But it never did. The pain and the anger, they were always there, waiting for me.
And now, I'm tired of running. I'm tired of pretending that everything is okay.
I know I can't change the past, but I can try to make things right. I can try to
be the man I should have been all along."
On the road, a car is driving through the snowy landscape, heading towards a gas station.
The camera zooms in on the car, revealing a rusted nineties Mitsubishi Pajero with different colored doors, pulling a trailer with snowmobiles and camping gear. Two men, Rolfe and WILL DOMIK (Kiefer Sutherland), sit in the worn seats of the car, both wearing heavy snow gear and fur-lined coats. The backseat is filled with backpacks and camping gear. Will is smoking as Rolfe looks out the window, his face beaten by life, searching for something.
ROLFE
"You really think he's out there?" He turns to Will. "I saw the picture, I'm telling you,
I saw him."
WILL takes a drag from his tobacco. "I saw your brother."
ROLFE's eyes are filled with doubt. "You're not the first one to tell me that you've seen him.
The authorities stopped looking for him a long time ago." Will puts on a blinker and pulls into
a gas station.
Both men get out of the car as Will begins to put gas in the car. The camera zooms in on Rolfe,
his face filled with pain and doubt.
ROLFE
"The places I've been to." He looks around as if trying to remember. "I've been to Mexico,
the Rockies, twice. Once I traveled to Florida." He laughs like it's all just a bad joke.
"And you know why I do it, knowing well that you might be just another con artist looking for a
fast buck?" He looks at Will deadpan, trying to read him to see if this is all just a con.
"Because of his daughter. She's in a hospital bed, dying, and you know what? Guess who's
in her life." He expects an answer, but Will just looks at him, expressionless, like he's
