Lucy slowly woke up. It was another boring Saturday. It had been about three weeks since school had started, and Saturdays and Sundays were the student's days off. Lucy, however, never had fun on Saturday mornings. She was a late sleeper, so by the time she got up, everyone else had pledged themselves to something. Johnny and Eli and sometimes Zen and Jean would play football in the yard behind the dorm building. Ruby and Alexander and sometimes Joy and Yin would hole up in the library, studying on whatever subject they felt they needed to freshen up on. And the music room was persistently occupied by a second year. Lucy made her way to the women's bathroom to freshen up. Entering, she saw a rather unusual sight.
"Jean." She spoke softly. "Are you shaving?"
Jean turned towards Lucy, her face half covered in shaving cream. "Um, yeah. My parents forced me to have a sex change. I was actually born male."
"They did that to you, and you were just a kid?"
"They were terrible criminals. Like.... The worst of people. They thought if I was a girl.... Then I could make money better...... if you catch my drift."
"Oh, that sounds horrible."
"It was, so I ran away, and now I live here, so it's not all bad. I got friends."
Lucy wrapped her arms around the still shaving Jean. "I'm sorry you had to experience that."
"The person who did this to me is still out there, and he did a pretty bad job, hence the shaving. Could you.... Go? This is kind of embarrassing."
"Oh, sorry." Lucy quietly exited. Once again, she had nothing to do.
"Hey, Lucy." Johnny suddenly yelled from across the hall. "We need a fourth for tag team football. Wanna join?"
"Of course." Lucy replied, having no idea what he was talking about.
